More DJI OSMO+ and Z-Axis test Footage at SuihoEh Japanese Garden in Van Nuys

So this is a stringout of more footage of my first tests with the DJI OSMO+ with Z-AXIS. I did a simple color correct, and the music is Tiny Parham and his Musicians "Washboard Wiggles" from PublicDoman4u.

I need to practice more for sure as you can still see my steps quite a bit. And I am thinking ND filters would be a good bet, as the exposure certainly goes from peaked to crushed across the board. Need to play some more.

It was the video card that failed, it is replaced and everything is working great

So after some posts online at various forums, it seemed to be that my crashing issues were what I feared. My EVGA NVIDIA GTX 680 4GB was causing the crashes.

Unfortunately MacVidCards seems to not have had any stock since September 2016, so I wasn't going to get a flashed replacement card.

So I started looking for a PC NVIDIA GTX 980 4 GB with 2 6 pin power supply. This was much easier said than done. There are still quite a few new 980's out there, but most of them either have 2 8 pin, or 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin for their power supplies. Looks like with the 10 series out (even though those won't work in a Mac since NVIDIA hasn't bothered writing drivers for them) that the 6 pin 980 have become rather sparse.

Finally I was able to find a ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 980 4GB AMP! Edition which had the requisite 2 6 pin adapters, and a bit of a speed increase over stock along with 3 fans instead of 2. I had never even heard of ZOTAC before, but most reviews seem like it is a pretty good company.

I got the card and installed it, no startup screen of course, but it runs great. And speed tests show it is about 100% faster than the 670 I had installed, and it works great, the crashes are gone. And Premiere Pro runs great!

MacPro Crashes are certainly to do with my NVIDIA Video Card

So I have been having some serious crash problems of late on my MacPro 4,1 that has been firmware flashed to a 5,1 with an NVIDIA GTX 670 and 4GB of RAM. I have posted about it here and here.

I am running 10.12.2 with 32 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 4095 MB and I had started getting bad crashes with noise in the image, which I show in a previous post. And it was happening more and more, especially when trying to run Premiere Pro. I had been running the OS X driver instead of the web driver, as it seemed to be more stable, but when I switched to the web driver 367.15.10.25f01 those crashes stopped, though I did get random restarts still, and crashes when I try and run Premiere Pro (which my previous posts show was from the Web Driver).

So the fact that the different drivers have the different crashes to me seems to show that it is for sure the video card that is causing the crashes. Unfortunately I don't really have the money right now for a replacement. Eventually I want to replace this whole rig with a PC (as the 2013 Trashcan MacPro is not a powerful enough machine for what I need) but that would be even more.

Now I currently have Premiere Pro running, but am doubtful it won't crash again soon. And I have run TechTool Pro 12 and it showed my Graphics RAM as being fine. Are there any other tests to see if my video card is for sure failing? I posted at Apple forums, but have gotten no help.

EDIT: Well I was wrong about none of the video noise crashes with the Web Driver. I hadn't had any, but when running Premiere they happen with consistence. I have had 4 of them in less than an hour. Seems like as soon as CUDA cuts in the issue is happened with the web driver. Basically I can't use Adobe (the main use for my machine) or I get the crashes. SHIT!

EDIT 2: Also posted on MacRumors and at least one poster says bad video card.

Still getting bad crashes on my MacPro, seems to be connected to NVIDIA card

Still getting nasty crashes, and seems to be with my GTX 670 4 GB in my 4,1 (firmware updated to 5,1) MacPro on Sierra 10.12.2. I am running Web Driver 367.15.10.25f01 and CUDA 8.0.57. From my included Crash Log it is looking like it is the Web Driver, and it crashed as soon as I started Premiere Pro 2017, though I seem to have been not having the previous noise crash running it, but am going to try switching back to the standard NVIDIA driver with Sierra and see if that works.

Expandrive sent me a test build of 5.4.3 and it fixes my crashing issue

After having Expandrive stop working with version 5.4.2 for Mac, I contacted Expandrive, and they just sent me a test build of 5.4.3 and it works again. It seems one of the libraries they updated had a processor based incompatibility that was only effecting a very small amount of people and I was unfortunately one of them!

Glad it is fixed, I had no idea how much I had come to rely on it!

First 4K test footage from DJI OSMO+ with Z-Axis

Some of my first test footage with my DJI OSMO+ with Z-Axis shot at the Suiho En Japanese Garden of Water and Fragrance in Van Nuys. This is unprocessed other than being recompressed for 4K YouTube. I still need to get better at the Z-Axis to stabilize my walking better. And it could certainly use a color correct. Still I am pretty impressed.

Adobe needs to fix OMF export from Premiere Pro 2017 with multiple bit rate audio!

The project I have been working on of late has 16 bit 48 hz audio for the most part, but our VO guy gives us amazing 24 bit audio, but because of this the OMF's that Premiere Pro kicks out do not sync up when the audio guy gets them. Some tracks go out of sync, and not others. And this keeps happening.

And there is a workaround. You need to use the Edit in Adobe Audition: Sequence command and then use Audition to export the OMF correctly.

This is a feature that needs to be pulled out of audition and put into Premiere pro, working OMF export, otherwise why have the feature there at all?

Come on Adobe. And I see they have had this issue for a long time from posts online! FIX THIS!

EDIT:

I have been told that basically Adobe has given up on OMF and now focuses on AAF, so next time I will see if the mixer can take AAF.

Expandrive 3.5.2 Crashing and not connecting with any Service in MacOS Sierra

I have quickly grown to love and be very dependent on ExpanDrive on both Mac and Windows, but the latest update to 3.5.2 on Mac does not work at all for me, though 3.5.1 seems to work just fine. Luckily it is possible to download old versions at ExpanDrive's site.

I have contacted support and sent my crash reports and diagnostic reports, but have not heard back as of yet.

For those who don't know, ExpanDrive lets you mount cloud drives as Network drives without keeping the files local, especially important on Laptops with limited hard drive space! Plus it is just one application instead of having to run and app for each of your cloud drives!

Adobe Premiere Pro 2017 11.01 crashes on Copy in Titler

So there is an annoying buy in Adobe Premiere Pro 2017 11.01 in the Titler Tool. If you use Command C for Copy the whole program crashes! It is really an annoyance of late.

It does seem at least Adobe knows about it, since they have commented in their forums. So hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Apple Watch and Notification Issues

So I have had my Apple Watch Series 2 for a few months now, and overall I really love it, except in it's handling of notifications.

My first smart watch was the original Pebble, and I really liked it, and liked how it gave notifications, and that was basically all that I used it for, and it worked well, but I found myself not using as much, because I really didn't need constant notifications.

I have also been a FitBit user for years, but found I didn't like the wrist ones with notifications as well as I liked just the normal FitBit One that I would throw into my pocket (until I washed it).

Jump to now and my Apple Watch, and overall notifications seem less important to me that the functions of the watch. In fact much of the time I don't even notice them, or ignore them.

The one time that Notifications seem to show up all the time is when I am actually using and interacting with the watch, and this is the time when I don't want to see any notifications.

Literally every time I am using Walkmeter to record my walks, I get notificaitions when I am attempting to interact with it, which slows me down, and just annoys me. The same when I am trying to use the Workout App, and I am trying to see how I am doing, and instead I get full screen notifications constantly! And it takes me out of my workout to dismiss the damn notifications when I want to be seeing the info on my workouts!

This to me seems like the opposite behavior of what it should be. When I am interacting with the watch or using a workout app, I only want to see something like the red dot and a specific vibration to notify me that there are notifications, but not to go full screen, because these are times when I am trying to use the watch itself! I would like a do not disturb feature from within workout apps!

Apple needs to do better at this! It annoys me literally every day.

My MacPro 4,1 is having nasty crashes, and I don't know why

So my MacPro 4,1, which has been firmware updated to a 5,1 so it is running OS X Sierra is having some nasty crashes, where I get this crazy video noise and the machine is basically locked up. I have to do a hard shutdown.

The system has 32GB of RAM and it's system is running of an OWC SSD in the a PCI Slot. It also has a USB 3 card, a Black Magic Intensity Pro and a PC NVIDIA GTX 670 with 4GB of RAM.

It started crashing in Premiere Pro, and DaVinci resolve so I thought it was video card related, but lately has been crashing at any time.

First I ran Cocktail and it's full suite of Automation. Then I restarted and ran Diskwarrior 5.0 from it's USB, but that didn't fix much if anything. And I upgraded to Tech Tool Pro 9 and ran it's full suite, and everything passed, including the video card (and I ran it's test a few more times). Strangely it ran longer while in the E-Drive than it has lately on it's own, which makes me think something with the system, and yet this looks like a very hardware centric crash.

And the system install is very recent, in the last 6 months it was a totally clean install.

Here is video of the crash:

I am just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? I am hoping it isn't hardware. Be it Video Card, motherboard or power supply, but it is getting so I can't do anything without a crash.

EDIT:

I have posted on the Apple Forums, and have one response.

I have looked at the console log and the files at ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ and have not seen anything that would be causing this.

I do see that Expandrive is crashing all the time, which I know.

This campaign is about interviews with Syrian Refugees, with Celebrities reading their stories.

First off here is an article on Julie Ann Robinson and the I Hear You, Kelly's boss who created the campaign over at Oxfam.

And you can view the other 9 videos at OXFAM America's YouTube Channel.

An amazing campaign and I am really glad that I got to be a part of it.

Adobe needs to bring back send to SpeedGrade in Premiere Pro

I have made a lot of posts about Adobe needing to upgrade SpeedGrade, but I had been using it with premiere Pro 2014. And with Direct link to Adobe SpeedGrade you could send your sequence and do a full grade in SpeedGrade, then send it back to Premiere and it showed up as a Lumetri Grade Filter on the clips. It was awesome!

Sure DaVinci Resolve is more powerful, but mainly because it has been consistently upgraded. There are still some things that I like better in SpeedGrade, like not only overall grading controls, but the same controls in light, medium and dark. I love just being able to increase contrast and saturation in just the mids! And the best features was Direct Link because the grade came back to Premiere, instead of being a rendered export from Resolve, making itinerant version changes much easier in commercials so much easier!

What I hadn't realized because I was using SpeedGrade with an earlier  Creative Cloud, was that not only have try not upgraded SpeedGrade, but in Premiere Pro 2015.3 they removed Direct Link to SpeedGrade!?!?!? So it is obviously gone in 2017.

Sure they have put some Lumetri controls in Premiere, but nothing like SpeedGrade. You can do color corrects, but the controls are very dumbed down, and not nearly as powerful! With most of the masking controls gone, and such simple controls, it is no replacement for SpeedGrade! And while DaVinci Resolve stills works great, the loss of Direct Link is a huge minus! There is of course a thread about it at Adobe Forums, but I doubt adobe is listening!

Honestly this move is so very Apple like. Exactly like Apple buying Shake, making it affordable, then gutting it for the smallest technology out of it. Or Apps buying FinalTouch, turning it into color and killing it. Or killing Final Cut Pro 7 for iMovie Pro, oops, I mean Final Cut Pro X.

And the best part is that while SpeedGrade could use some upgrades, even without them it is still so much more powerful than Lumetri controls in Premiere Pro!

Adobe has made a huge mistake in losing it's powerful color correction tool. It is a huge sore point missing in Creative Cloud now.

Simon Wyndham on RedShark News on him considering leaving the Mac for Windows Editing

Simon Wyndham at RedShark News has a good read on why he is considering moving back to PC after the lackluster Pro Laptops and the lack of a real Pro Mac.

Now I have been saying this for years now. I don't want to leave Mac, as I like it much better than Windows, but Windows has really become superior for Professional Computer work. There is not the choice with Mac, and the fact that the MacPro is from 2013 and itself has no upgrade ability really limits the Mac. Sure I could go Hackintosh, but working on a Quo at work I have seen the issues with upgrading, and don't really want to deal with it.

Apple has given up on the creative professional, and Microsoft has stepped up. Look at the next Windows Update for Creatives, and the Suface, Surface Book, and Surface Studio are really for creatives!

I think Apple is making a huge mistake by not making machines for the market that kept them afloat through all the bad years, but Tim Cook doesn't seem to agree, and Apple will suffer for it.

No one is talking about the fact that Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 runs on Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra on Mac

So Adobe released it's latest update to it Creative Cloud Suite yesterday, and no one is talking about one of the biggest things for Mac OS X users! The last version 2015, only ran on El Capitan, which was an issue for many (especially Hackintosh Users), not running on any earlier OS. Well with 2017 it seems things have changed!

Just check out the Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 System Requirements on Adobe's site, and you will see what I mean!

Mac OS X  v10.10, v10.11 or v10.12

Yes, that means it now runs on Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra! Who releases a new version that works on earlier software? A company that listens! Wow! Awesome!

And I can finally upgrade to Sierra on my home machine!

Performance Improvements with smarter GPU usage and more GPU accelerated effects!

An Improved Live Text template workflow, and Character Animator scenes in After Effects via Dynamic Link.

Also seamless integration of TypeKit Fonts, which will automatically sync if a font is missing when a project is opened (nice!).

New Project from Template with settings like color management and folder structure, which you can sync through Creative Cloud. I am so excited about this!

You can set marker duration by dragging.

Avid DNxHD codec quicktime writing.

And finally Date and Time values in output name templates (YES!!! I know many companies that need to use this!).

Adobe Released Premiere Pro Creative Cloud 2017

For the start of the MAX conference in San Diego Adobe has updated Creative Cloud to 2017. Here is a new Feature Summary of Adobe Premiere Pro 2017.

First they have released Collaboration with Team Projects in Beta. And it is actually fairly reasonable. You it is an additional 29.95 a month for a single app or $69.95 for all Desktop apps (though currently it is Premiere Pro, After Effects and Prelude). This is in addition to the monthly for the suite.

Then their is additional VR support.

Visual Keyboard Shortcut Mapping (which they should have had since the start).

Enhanced open captions, Refined Lumetri Color Tools, and HDR support, Expanded Destination Publishing (something I have never used), Live Text Templates with Dynamic Graphics, Extra File Format Support including natvie QT DNxHD / DNxHR export! Improved Audio Effects with Higher Quality Sound Processing and improved Fidelity from Adobe Audition. Also faster GPU Accelerated effects, and improved support for Apple Metal.

Improvements to Dynamic Link with After Effects (woohoooooo)!

And a Global FX Mute Button for improved playback!

And it still works on El Capitan, which is nice for the Quo I work on, which I just spent too long getting it to run on El Cap to get it to Sierra. In fact it says it works with 10.10 10.11 or 10.12, so this actually goes back before El Capitan to Yosemite!

Mr. Reader for iPad has stopped development and has been pulled from App Store: The Horror!

My hands down favorite RSS reader for the iPad, the great Mr. Reader has had it's development stopped and has been pulled from the App store as of September 2016, after no updates for a year. The worst part is even after no development for so long it was still by far the best. Honestly all it needed was to add the in line Safari viewer so it would support add and pop up blockers!

Now I use Feedly, but never liked it's app much, so I have been going through all the RSS readers in the store to find one i like as much as the late Mr. Reader. Now I used to use REEDER, and I think it works, but not nearly as well as Mr. Reader. I miss scrolling to mark articles as read and marker all as read moving to the next category. And honestly the main the I like in Mr. reader over Reeder is that instead of just showing sites ico files, it showed a preview of the post, usually the featured image, which I have really come to rely on. Especially for photo feeds, such as 500px!

If anyone has any suggestions for anything that will work for me, please let me know.

Apple removed my post on removing 5 Star Ratings from iOS 10!

So i started a discussion on apple discussions about them removing 5 star ratings from iOS 10. It was to get people to contact apple about this to get the feadback, and hope people would show their displeasure and Apple might change their wrongful change, but they erased the posts as of today! The posts were at this point.

Apple dontacted me with the following e-mail:

Working on 1.1.3 of Sharpei Puppy Stickers

I am working on version 1.1.3 of my Sharpei Puppy Stickers app for iOS 10 Messages. I already have 10 more images of Indy to add. So I need to add more JK Pics, and then will put it up to Apple for a new change.

I have made a few sales, but am hoping for more. Hopefully if people give it reviews it might show up higher in lists, and I am hoping as I add more and more images it will be more of a value! It currently has 46 images, so the next version will have at least 56 images and likely more than that.

Kamerar Baton Extender for DJi OSMO

I have been looking at 3rd party accessories for a DJI Osmo of late and came across this, the Kamerar Baton Extender.

This $100 device basically extends the reach of the OSMO by 22" with electronic extension controls and a second handle for control (and so you don't break the mount on your Osmo handle).

It looks very interesting, especially becoming more like a jib.

Mr Cheesy Cam has an interesting video review.

Cinema 4D lessons on making 3D Grass

So I have been learning Cinema 4D of late, as a new weapon in my arsenal. Been doing lessons every day, but the next job where I might be using it would include grass, so I have been doing a lot of lessons on how to do grass in Cinema 4D.

If anyone is interested Toolfarm has posted a page of the best Cinema 4D Grass Lessons, and they are all really worth checking out!

Chris Schmidt's is awesome, and I have been trying to get the movement from Quick VFX, but haven't pulled it off yet.
