Editing Hail Caesar by the Cohen brothers in Premiere Pro

Adobe is highlighting how the Cohen Brothers editing their new film, Hail Ceaser on Premiere Pro! Great to see a big film done on Premiere since I like it so much better than AVID of late. It's integration with the rest of the creative cloud just makes it so powerful if you do some good organization techniques.

Adobe Upgrades SpeedGrade update, but still not multi-monitor support, SpeedGrade needs an interface upgrade now!

Eric Philpott at Adobe blogs has the info on the latest update. While I am excited for some of the updates, especially LumetrinColor changes in Premiere carrying over to SpeedGrade, overall I am completely dissapointed.

I have really come to love SpeedGrade, and it's ability to put the grade as filters on clips, but the program needs an interface overhaul! The fact that it is still a single monitor program is unforgivable! You need to be able to move the viewer and scopes to a seperate monitor as you see fit! I want my controls and timeline on one screen and 3 scopes and a viewer on a second monitor (the viewer for doing masks, which you really can't do on an external video display).

Sure DaVinci is a more powerful program, but the integration with Premiere and not having to render out your grade is amazing, but Adobe needs to stop porting it's features into Premiere, and fix it's interface!

Adobe has release After Effects CC 2015 (13.7) with CINEWARE 3.0

Check out Tim Kurkoski's blog post on the new features, which mostly are Bug Fixes and CINEWARE 3.0 for Cinema 4D with most features for the latest version (not the Lite Version included with After Effects).

Problems with MXF files that have been imported into Final Cut Pro X

So I was given some footage with absolutely no knowledge of how it was shot, or what format it was, but was not worried as I have am running Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Unfortunately I was wrong.

They all appear to be quicktime movies, but will not open in anything, or if they do only audio appears. And when I opened them in VLC it says it is a missing XALG encoder.

The only thing I could find on this issue is this unanswered post at Adobe Forums, and it seems to be my exact problem.

It turns out these are MXF files shot from a Sony Camera, and they were brought in through Final Cut Pro X (which I do not have on this machine), and it wrapped it in an MOV with the XALG encoder. The strange part is I do have the latest version of Motion so that I can get the Apple Pro Codec Updates, so you would think it would have the codec to play the video, but even motion won't open this quicktime movies.

Luckily I was able to get the person with the footage to send the original cards that the footage was shot on, and was able to copy them over and import the MXF files directly into Premiere Pro with no problem, but I can't seem to get the MOV's that Final Cut Pro X to open in anything. I figured Motion would do it, and was thinking maybe Compressor, but if Motion can't do it I am not spending the $50 on compressor, and certainly not paying Apple for Final Cut Pro again because it made some video footage useless.

This is a huge issue. Final Cut Pro X should not do anything to the files it imports, it should just play them all natively. That it wraps them in another file that makes them unusable by other programs makes me dislike this program even more.

No Film School on why Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be shot on the RED WEAPON 8K.

No Film School has a good article on why Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be shot on the Red Weapon in 8 K.

It includes James Gunn's post on Facebook, which is really interesting, and I love what he is saying about Film and Digital. How he is not trying to replicate film and just finds it easier to do digital work when it is all digital (which is always what I felt, and what made doing a film like Star Wars The Force Awakens on film seem a little ridiculous). It also for Long Takes and for the small size of the body.

Kodak is releasing a new Super 8 Camera!

One of the surprise announcements of CES this year was Kodak's very cool new Super 8 Camera! It will be $400 and $50 for a cartridge of film that you send and will be processed and that includes a digital scan as well! And it records sound to SD card.

Not only is this cool because most thought this format was mostly dead, except for Pro 8 Film (which crazily will do up to 5K scans).

I hope this gets some use at Film Schools, though I bet most have moved to digital.

Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects Keyboard Shortcut Cheat Sheets

Jamie at Make a Web Site has posted an Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects Keyboard shortcut Cheat Sheets. Very cool. Check them out.

The Verge on Apple not using Final Cut Pro X

The Verge noticed a job listing for an editor at it's Beats Music division, but it is asking for someone with experience with AVID MEDIA COMPOSER and ADOBE PREMIERE PRO! Ha! It seems even Apple does not use Final Cut Pro X.

iTunes update

So I have been spending all the time I can re-rating my iTunes Library, and so far I am only in D! This is going to literally take forever! Such a pain. And it seems to have been slowing down the more things I rate or make playlists, but that seems to have changed.

iTunes updated to version recently, which allows for 100,000 songs in iTunes Match, and iTunes seems to have sped up again, no more beachballs all the time. Nice! Lets hope it stays this way! This is such an improvement. My almost 50,000 library seems zippy again!

Message now works on my Mac and all it took was resetting my PRAM! Some NVIDIA weirdness though.

I can't believe I had not tried that, but Apple support got me and now Messages works in El Capitan

There was some strangeness though, and it is to do with my NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670 I mentioned in my previous post. After resetting the PRAM the computer came back up, but all the blue was orange again, and this time I took screenshots, but they looks correct once the problem is fixed! And to fix the issue I had to re-install the latest NVIDIA web drivers, though they were showing as already installed. Next time I will take a physical picture.

10.11.2 El Capitan update did not require NVIDIA web driver to boot (though it looks crazy)

I run a NVIDIA GTX 670 with 4 GB of RAM in my MacPro, and it is not flashed. So when I update the system I have to use VNC to sign into my Mac and update the NVIDIA Web drivers and restart before my Mac shows anything on the monitors (or I have to swap my old GTX 270 and do the Update).

This seems to have changed with 10.11.2. In fact it showed the updating screen before the Desktop, and then came to the desktop. Of course it was not normal, in fact all Blue Colors were Orange! I wish I had though to take screen shots, as after the update I upgraded the NVIDIA web driver and restarted and everything was back to normal.

This is awesome news if this continues in the future, as it makes it much easier to upgrade to the latest NVIDIA web driver. I hope it just wasn't a fluke.

Still unable to log into Messages with iCloud in El Capitan 10.11.2

So 10.11.2 came out, and I am still unable to log into Messages with iCloud on my Mac, though it works fine on my iPhone and iPad.

So I am on the phone with Apple Tech support. They for sure can see that my MacPro is not authorized. We went through signing out my iPad and iPhone of Messages, Facetime and iCloud and then signing back in, but that didn't help.

I was then moved to a level 2 tech, who sent me and apple application called Capture Data, and had me try to log into Messages with it collecting packets, and I sent the info to Apple and they will be contacting engineers.

They were very nice and I am supposed to hear back Monday. Fingers crossed that they can figure this out. Seems like it has to be on their end, as it worked fine before El Capitan and the weirdest part to them as well is that it still happens on my clean install of the OS.

Update on iTunes and El Captian

So I have still not got iMessages to work in El Capitan and I have to Log into iCloud every time I restart or it doesn't work, but this is about iTunes.

After getting my iTunes back working, but losing all of my playlists and Metadata, I have been working on re-rating my tracks, and remaking my playlists.

What is interesting, and scary to me is as I rate more tracks, iTunes slows down more and more, and I am getting more and more beachballs. Basically I listen to a track and give it rating then skip to the next track, and often it starts playing the new track, but doesn't show it in the interface for a while and I get the beachball for a bit before I can rate the next track. And as I rate more tracks and remake more playlists it gets worse.

I just hope once I am done (as I am only in B so far) that it doesn't slow down to the speed of my old messed up Library. I thought the new clean library would just stay faster, but it seems to be getting slower the more work I do on it!

This is really scary as it shows that the slowdowns are indemic in iTunes code with large libraries and a large metadata collection.

It means Apple really needs to start over on iTunes and rewrite the code from the base up, but that is a scary prospect as it will likely break much of the functionality that exists (and they have already been losing more and more functionality over time), and create new issues for a while.

Honestly I just hate to have to put all the time into fixing my iTunes only to see it be slow and hard to use again.

Managed to fix my ailing TIVO with my Mac

My TIVO Premiere XL had started having issues, it was pixelating and randomly pausing, which are signs that the hard drive is failing. My TIVO is way out of warranty, and last time I called TIVO for this issue with my previous Series 3 TIVO, they told me to buy a new one. Well right now we can't afford a new TIVO, and especially not a TIVO and moving over my lifetime service (which they don't offer on their site, but I was certainly going to call them and get it), plus since I have the XL if I got a new TIVO I would really like a PRO model, and there is no Pro Model of the TIVO Bolt, only of the previous generation ROMIO.

So I decided to try and repair my TIVO by replacing the drive, and doing it with a bigger capacity. I did this with the help of two sites, Ross Walker's excellent guide to Upgrading or Rescuing a TIVO, and the Tivo Community forum thread on the awesome JMFS Live CD that Walker tells you to use.

Now it was not without issues, firstly because I have a Mac, and it would not boot off the JMFS Live CD, and to get around this I used Parallels to run the JMFS Live CD in emultation, though this meant I had to connect the drives externally so I could get them to mount in Parallels (i have a Sonnet SATA card, but the drives show up as internals so I couldn't get them to mount). At first I tried to use 2 external drive housings, that the drives just plug into, but one was USB 3 (and my USB 3 card no longer works with OS X EL Captian) so it was really slow and kept failing after 24 hours.

After this I tried using the Ubuntu method to just do the copy, but couldn't get that to work as the drives would not show up in it in parallels, so I gave up and went back to the JMFS live CD in Parallels.

So I put one drive in an OWC housing and tried that, but still I got failures. So I put both drives in OWC housings, with a lot of space around them and pointed a Vornado at them to cool them down. On my fifth try it succeeded.

This is after it succeeded and trying to fix failed blocks, which it changed from 469K to only 29K, nice job JMFS!

This it almost completed showing the higher errors.

And with JMFS, after the copy I was able to expand, and supersize the drive. The commands to activate the Accoustic and Sound management (got errors) but it is a brand new drive, and a 3TB WD Green Drive, so I am not worried.

I put the new drive in and started my TIVO and it did 2 restarts with noise, and then did it's full startup and all my shows and record settings made it over, and it works great!

Amazing how painful it was having no TV for a week, but at least it is up and working now, and now I have higher capacity! WOOHOO!

Thanks for the help people on the boards.

Problems with Mail in El Capitan eating all application memory

I have been getting problems in El Capitan running out of application memory (and I have 24 GB of RAM and am not running many programs). I checked Activity Monitor and it seems that Apple Mail is the culprit and is eating all of my memory and run time.

I did a google search and came up with this Apple Discussion on the issue. It seems that Mail is loading all of it's log files into RAM and compressing them into ZIP files. You can at least temporarily fix the problem by deleting your log files at ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Logs/Mail/ with Mail closed.

And the problems continue with El Capitan!

ITunes and El Capitan Nightmare as well as my previos Synology NAS nightmare!

If you read my blog you know I have been having a nightmare of a time with El Capitan, and the latest is iTunes.

I have a huge library with over 40,000 tracks and many videos.

Now honestly I have been some issues with iTunes for the last 6 months, but that was a very different situation. Years back I decided my iTunes Library was too big to keep within my MacPro, so I had gotten a Synology DS212j NAS to hold my Library. It had 2 3 Terrabyte Hard Drives in a mirrored Raid 1 configuration, with my Library kept locally. There had been some issues moving media because of the different drive file formats (Character Case), but mostly it went well and worked fairly well for a while.

The first problem was all the sudden I lost a bunch of files, and they had been put in a strange folder and renamed. I got in touch with Synology and someone admitted that it was the synology, but never helped. Eventually I tuned off the Synology Cloud Sync app, and it fixed the issue, though I had to re-import all the messed up songs. The synology then worked fine for years, until...

One day I noticed my tracks on playlists on my iPod had gotten weird, so I went into iTunes and realized something had happened to my whole library. While my raitings were still there, 75% of my playlists were completely messed up, with randomized songs, and even worse much of the library was messed up. Not only were many tracks showing up as another song, and when you played them they came back to life as their old song. There were strange doubled tracks, and on the Synology even weirder stuff was going on.

Many tracks had become folders, with the track missing, and completely other songs within the folder from elsewhere in my library.

This is an example. And this was all over my library.

Not only that but tracks were gone and were listed, but were other things like PNGs.

Or even JS files.

And many video files were renamed to different files, or sometimes even different file types. So a video would show up as audio, or audio as video. And some files are just completely missing.

And my Time Machine Library backup had the same issues, so it must have happened a week or two earlier and I didn't notice until I synced my iPod!

Literally my whole Library was a mess!

I moved the whole thing back to an internal drive, and let iTunes Organize it, but it still left many files on the NAS, though they should have all been copied locally. And I had to manually add back all the files that were put into strange folders within my library. I literally spent the last 6 months fixing it. Deleting all of my playlists and fixing them, and using TuneSpan to figure out which tracks weren't local and moving them local manually. Finally I had all my files locally in the same folder, and iTunes was working correctly, though I did still have some misnamed video files to figure out.

That is when I upgraded El Capitan. As I have documented before when I upgraded iTunes slowed to a crawl, and was beachballing all the time! Between this and having lost the ability to sign into Messages, I decided to do a fresh install and see if that would fix things.

It didn't, still no Messages Activation, and iTunes was still slow as hell. I did manage to get iTunes to Organize my files and finally it seemed to work and either just got rid of references to the files on the NAS or copied them over, but as soon as this finished iTunes just completely locked up. As soon as it opened it beachballed literally all the time. I would leave it all day and night and still it would be beachballing.

So I thought I would try starting over by importing my iTunes Library XML into a fresh iTunes that had it's media set to it's current location. This was a nightmare in itself as for every iOS app I had it said there was either a newer, older or same version, and would not accept when I said do the same for all, and they would take a while to come up. And once everything was imported, iTunes just started beachballing again and never stopped. The console was lit up with errors, such as the following:

10/30/15 5:49:42.131 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.xpc.launchd.domain.pid.quicklookd.707) Path not allowed in target domain: type = pid, path = /Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibrary.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com.apple.iT unesLibraryService.xpc error = 147: The specified service did not ship in the requestor's bundle, origin = /System/Library/Frameworks/QuickLook.framework/Versions/A/Resources/quicklookd. app

10/30/15 6:37:03.000 PM kernel[0]: PM notification timeout (pid 724, iTunes)

And I also posted the SpinDump of my CPU hogging at my blog, in case anyone could help, but got no responses at any online forums.

So I once again removed my iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml and reset the media location to it's current organized location. This left me with only my Cloud purchases in my library, though not downloaded. So used Fat Cat Software's PowerTunes  (yes I have bought about anything that could help fix my library in the last 6 months, PowerTunes, TuneSpan, Supersync and TuneUp) to import the media not currently in my Library.

Now most of my media is back, but all my playlists are gone, and even worse all my ratings are gone, and that is literally year and years of rating my music to make smart playlists based on my ratings!

This has literally been one nightmare followed by another! And now I have to go through and re-organize my whole library, remake all of my playlists, and re-rate my over 46,000 tracks in my music library alone! And I am missing still missing tracks from the whole Synology fiasco, as some of the tracks it made folders of just dissapeared when it did it.

Now most of my playlists are easy as they are just albums, as I find it easier to add to my iPod that way, but I also had playlists of best of by year. So all tracks with a certain rating or higher by year randomized, and that is mostly what I listen to. So I have to get through my entire library and rate every track to make those again. And I don't want to sync my iPod again until I do that!

El Capitan and iTunes major problems

So if you read my blog you know I have been having major issues with El Capitan, so much so that I did a fresh install on another hard drive, but it did not fix either my Messages issues or my issues with iTunes.

iTunes has just been incredibly slow. Like so slow it is unusable with constant beachballs. It just barely functions, and even then not much. It is just a mess. I tried what I could, running Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro as well as fixing permissions to see if it would fix anything, but it didn't so I decided to re-import my Library.

This should not be a hard process as it just involves removing the iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml file from the iTunes folder (SAVE THEM THOUGH), then restarting iTunes. One step they don't tell is that if you Medua is on an external drive, then open itunes and set the Media to that location and the go to Library and import the XML you moved .

Now this took quite a long time for me as it basically brought up a dialogue for every iOS app saying it was already there, either older, newer or the same, and the do the same for all check box did nothing. So about 12 hours later I had my library imported again, and low and behold, while everything i back with proper metadata, iTunes is once again unusable.

Just frozen with a beachball.

It is all also pegging my processor (or at least some of them as shown from Activity Monitor.

And is sending up a slew of messages in the console, including that it is pegging the processor.

And is is basically beachballing and unusable!

I don't want to lose my whole iTunes Library, which I have literally worked years on! WHAT THE HELL! This is ridiculous, between the iCloud issues and iTunes being completely fucked, El Capitan is the worst update to OS X I have ever used, and I have used them all!

El Capitan Clean Install still can't authorize Messages!

So I decided it had been too long since I have done a clean system install, and since I am having so many OS X problems, I decided to do a clean install. I found an old small hard drive, and wiped it and installed El Capitan on it.

After re-install I tried Messages, and low and behold, I still am getting the can't authorize iMessage message! WTF! And I have a serial number in my about this mac, and have no replaced the motherboard or processors or even ram! THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING! It worked fine until El Capitan!

Honestly I can only think of one thing it could be, and I hope it isn't. I have this Wifi and Bluetooth Card from MacVidCards to enable Handoff, Continuity and Airdrop. It worked fine in Yosemite, but maybe Apple did something to stop it in El Capitan, and that is stopping me from being able to use Messages in El Capitan. Maybe.

Going to also go through all my internet accounts and see if paring them down helps. I don't know, this is so damn frustrating!

Mac Peformance Guide on a new Mac Pro

Mac Performance guide fields a question on why their isn't a new MacPro tower.

And hopefully they have it right, that Apple is not dropping it, but waiting for Thunderbolt 3, which can go over a USB 3.1 cable, and leave it all one port.

Still doesn't answer the need for real PCI slots and the ability to use normal video cards (especially NVIDIA cards), but it would make for a much simpler machine. If a port can be USB, Video or Thunderbolt with the same connector.

Larry Jordan has a good article on how Disk Utility has been emasulated in OS X El Capitan

Larry Jordan has a good in depth article on the emasculation of Disk Utility in OS X El Capitan. He goes into how Soft Raid is the best solution to create software Raids in El Capitan.

Of course Soft Raid has always been a better solution than Disk Utility, but it is also a $179 solution to something that you used to be able to do for Free in Disk Utility!

Major Problems with El Capitan: Continued Again

My problems have been continuing with El Capitan.

Now it is iTunes that is really a mess. It is so slow, that it is barely functioning, with a beach ball lasting hours at times. My wife and I were trying to stream a movie from my computer to my Apple TV, and it froze up and stayed that way for hours. iTunes is just wrecked at this point.

I might have been able to fix Photos, so it goes to the correct Library. I had to use Fat Cat Software's iPhoto Library Manager to do it though. When I opened iPhoto Library Manager 4, it showed 2 Libraries, and one was the one that Photos was trying to use, and it was an empty Library that I never created, and was showing up RED. So I deleted it, and iPhoto seems to go to the correct library now.

Still have been unable to get Messages to function at all, though I was able to make it go further by repairing permissions using Onyx, since that functionality has been removed from Disk Utility (as well as the ability to create Software RAIDs). And since it doesn't even work for a brand new account, or after a re-install of el capitan I am kind of stumped.

My next step is to format another drive and install El Capitan on that and see if I can get Messages to work on that. I don't really want to do that, but I can think of no other way to get Messages to work. My current system does go back quite a ways, so a clean install might be in order, though I don't want to, as I have all the programs I want installed, but it looks like that may be my only recourse at this point.

Will keep updating to tell you how things are going.

Major Problems with El Capitan: Continued

So I forgot some things in my last post and have since upgraded to 10.11.1 and wanted to share some more on my issues with El Capitan.

Photos no longer remembers my photo library and instead asks every time which one to use, though if it just used the last one it used it would be fine, but instead it starts up and says it can't use the current library and I need to chose one. Fun fun fun.

Next continues from a problem I mentioned the last time. Because of the new security features of El Capitan, of which there are no fine controls, certain applications must ask permission to function, and you must give that permission every time you use them. One such program is iTeleport Connect, which I use to VPN into my computer. So when I restart it no longer can log into it, I must type in my Admin password to make it work. The problem arises when I must remotely restart my machine, or even worse when I do a system update.

Since I run a PC based NVIDIA GTX 670 as my graphics card, when I do a system update, it doesn't function until the latest NVIDIA driver is installed. Previously what I had done, is install the update, wait for it to restart and then use iTeleport Connect to VPN into my computer and install the newest NVIDIA driver, and walla, when I restart my video card is working fine and I can go about my day. Since El Capitan no longer allows iTeleport to work without first entering my Admin Password, and since after a system update I can no longer see my computer, I have to pull my video card and re-install my old GTX 270 the machine came with, and then update the NVIDIA drive, restart to make the driver work, then shut down and install my GTX 670 and then start up. Then I have a working video card. Much more of a pain than being able to VPN in and install using my iPad. If I had money I would get a new video card that is flashed for Mac, so I could install the new driver, but I can't afford that.

And now we come to the 10.11.1 update. Not only did I have to do the swapping video cards rigmarole to get my computer up again, but when I restarted the system was lets shall we say funky. I couldn't open some programs and many of my system preferences didn't work, they just wouldn't launch. And the best part was the fix. I ran the latest version of Onyx, and repaired Disk Permissions, and when I restarted everything functioned again. So obviously the new internal Permissions Repair did not work correctly, and with Disk Utility no longer having that functionality I had to use a 3rd party software to fix the System Install and allow things to work again!

And I was hoping this would fix my Messages not being able to log in, but no of course it didn't. I still get the stupid activation error when I try to sign into iMessages in the Messages app.

So far El Capitan is a nightmare, and nothing has wowed me to show me that this is a worthwhile update.

Scott Simmons at PVC has started a series on a Mac Editor switching to PC, well worth a read

Scott Simmons at the Pro Video Coalition was given a Dell Workstation laptop and has started a series on Editing on it after being used to Mac for years. The article is just getting started on it, but it is an interesting read and I look forward to reading more about it.

Personally I never edit on a laptop and do most of my editing on a Mac Tower (or even a QUO hackintosh at one place I work), but with the "new MacPro" (I put in quotes since it has been so long since the trashcan has been released without a single update) I have started to think that my next edit system may very well be a PC Workstation with an NVIDIA TITAN graphics card instead of the MacPro trashcan.

Major problems with El Capitan

Well Apple recently released it's next OS X upgrade, OS X El Capitan, and for me at least it has nothing but trouble.

I run a MacPro 4,1, which is rapidly again, but still works well for video work (especially with an NVIDIA GTX 670 with 4GB of RAM of it), and so far my upgrade to OS X El Capitan has been a nightmare.

First off Messages no longer works for me. I cannot log into Messages with my Apple account, it says that I can't activate my account. I have been trying solutions since it came out, including deleting preferences, resetting my keychain, setting up a new account (and it still wouldn't work there), and re-installing El Capitan, but still it does not activate. So Messages is just completely broken for me. And I am not running a Hackintosh, nor have I changed mortherboards and lost my serial number (it still shows up in about this Mac).

And then there are the problems with Mail. While my accounts have come over, it seems it has removed the passwords from the outgoing mail servers, and since they are so badly hidden within Apple Mail (in advanced and you have to select custom in a drop down menu to get to them), it is a super pain to go in and re-enter all of my passwords so that I can actually send mail! And this seems to have happened with my mom's computer as well, and I can't easily fix it, since I can't log into Messages to do video chat and take over her computer! ANNOYING!

And while the startup seems quicker now, my finder is very slow and so is iTunes! And my first step on any repair has always been to repair permissions, but you with Disk Utility at least, you can't do that anymore. That feature has been removed as the system is supposed to do that itself when you install a new program, but I would like to be able to do that myself. Now Titanium software's Onyx still says it does that, I am not sure you should anymore, though I am going to try it.

Now Alsfot's Diskwarrior works on El Capitan, but it's repairs have not helped my system at all. And TechTool Pro needs to be updated to work so I can't try that.

And another annoyance is that iTeleport Connect, which I use to VNC into my computer from my iPad needs you to enter your admin password every time it starts in El Capitan, so if the machine restarts I can no longer VNC into my computer without first being there to enter the password! I am sure this is a security feature, but I have saved my Machine using iTeleport when some driver screwed up and I was still able to VNC in, but with it not able to log in on it's own I can't do that anymore! FRUSTRATING!!!

And that is to say nothing of pretty much the whole Adobe Video suite not working at all in El Capitan! And there is no word from Adobe of an update (other than some word that their previous demo of After Effects running on Metal [of of the new big features of El Capitan] and running 8 x faster will likely not be coming to consumers) that will fix this. Hopefully they are working with Apple and an update is coming, but so far there is no word.

So far El Capitan is a huge bust for me, and I wish I hadn't upgraded at all. Apple should not have released this until the bugs were worked out, and important software like Adobe's Creative Cloud actually worked!

Apple has refreshed it's entire iMac Line, with a 4K 21.5 inch and all 27 inch models now 5K

Apple has refreshed it's entire iMac line. They all sport Thunderbolt 2 ports, and there is now a 21.5 inch 4K display (Starting at $1499), and they have made all 27 Inch Models 5K (at $1799-2299)! AWESOME!

And they have upgraded their wireless keyboards, mice and touchpads with rechargeable batteries with a month life that charge and pair using lightning cables.

The iMacs are pretty exciting as editing machines, especially with Thunderbolt. I would still prefer NVIDIA graphics over the AMD that Apple now uses across it's line, but they are still good cards.

Light L16 Camera

Not a video camera (though it will shoot 4K video), but a new type of camera, that offers features like the Lytro (being able to refocus an image after you take it) using new technology has been announced, the L16 from Light. I first red about it at RedShark News.

This is basically a flat camera body with 16 tiny lenses with different focal lengths and light sensitivity mounted sidways with 45 degree mirrors, and in any one photo 10 of the lenses fire and advanced computational power combines them to create an over 50 mega pixel image. And if you zoom with the touch screen, it fires more long lenses to create a zoomed image, and while everything will be in focus to begin with you can then refocus using their software.

Sounds like some very cool tech, thought a bit pricy at $1699 ($1299 if you pre-order with a $200 downpayment), and it does seem pretty large in all the videos. Not like a smart phone, but certainly smaller than a DSLR.

I will be very interested in seeing how this actually performs when it comes out!

Tangent Ripple showed off at IBC, under $400 Color Correction

Tangent has introduced the Ripple a new low end color correction board with 3 wheels and 3 nobs that will be under $400. Sure it is not a full color correction board, but this is the type of thing I have been thinking about for a long time, as it would make color correction so much easier!

Apple iOS 9 Content blockers leaves iPhone 5 and 5 C out in the cold

The ability to add content blockers to your browser in iOS 9 was one of my most looked forward to features, but though Apple doesn't mention it, all the apps for content blocking leave out the iPhone 5C as well as the iPad 3 which can both take iOS 9. It makes me wonder what else is left off of the earlier devices. I am betting that the ability to keep playing a video on the iPad doesn't work on the iPad 3, but will have to test and 3 as soon as I can get my wife to upgrade my old iPad 3.

Finally someone else si also getting my "system_profiler quit unexpectedly" crashes in OS X

For a while now I have been getting "system_profiler quit unexpectedly" crashes in OS X, and I get them a lot, but have not always been able to figure out why. I have a thread at Apple discussions on it, and finally someone else has run into the error.

And the thing we both have in common is that we both have PC NVIDIA cards as our Graphics cards, so it is quite possible that this is the issue. The other user has reported this as a bug to apple, but since we are not using approved video cards it will likely be ignored.

He also has a temporary solution, to disable the system profiler app, but this seems excessive in case you need the system profiler, but if it keeps bothering me I might try it.

sudo chmod -x /usr/sbin/system_profile (To revert this, use "+x" instead)

This is really an annoyance, and sometimes happens a lot in rapid succession, so I really do wish I could figure out a permanent solution to this problem.
