It was the video card that failed, it is replaced and everything is working great

So after some posts online at various forums, it seemed to be that my crashing issues were what I feared. My EVGA NVIDIA GTX 680 4GB was causing the crashes.

Unfortunately MacVidCards seems to not have had any stock since September 2016, so I wasn't going to get a flashed replacement card.

So I started looking for a PC NVIDIA GTX 980 4 GB with 2 6 pin power supply. This was much easier said than done. There are still quite a few new 980's out there, but most of them either have 2 8 pin, or 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin for their power supplies. Looks like with the 10 series out (even though those won't work in a Mac since NVIDIA hasn't bothered writing drivers for them) that the 6 pin 980 have become rather sparse.

Finally I was able to find a ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 980 4GB AMP! Edition which had the requisite 2 6 pin adapters, and a bit of a speed increase over stock along with 3 fans instead of 2. I had never even heard of ZOTAC before, but most reviews seem like it is a pretty good company.

I got the card and installed it, no startup screen of course, but it runs great. And speed tests show it is about 100% faster than the 670 I had installed, and it works great, the crashes are gone. And Premiere Pro runs great!

MacPro Crashes are certainly to do with my NVIDIA Video Card

So I have been having some serious crash problems of late on my MacPro 4,1 that has been firmware flashed to a 5,1 with an NVIDIA GTX 670 and 4GB of RAM. I have posted about it here and here.


I am running 10.12.2 with 32 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 4095 MB and I had started getting bad crashes with noise in the image, which I show in a previous post. And it was happening more and more, especially when trying to run Premiere Pro. I had been running the OS X driver instead of the web driver, as it seemed to be more stable, but when I switched to the web driver 367.15.10.25f01 those crashes stopped, though I did get random restarts still, and crashes when I try and run Premiere Pro (which my previous posts show was from the Web Driver).

So the fact that the different drivers have the different crashes to me seems to show that it is for sure the video card that is causing the crashes. Unfortunately I don't really have the money right now for a replacement. Eventually I want to replace this whole rig with a PC (as the 2013 Trashcan MacPro is not a powerful enough machine for what I need) but that would be even more.

Now I currently have Premiere Pro running, but am doubtful it won't crash again soon. And I have run TechTool Pro 12 and it showed my Graphics RAM as being fine. Are there any other tests to see if my video card is for sure failing? I posted at Apple forums, but have gotten no help.

EDIT: Well I was wrong about none of the video noise crashes with the Web Driver. I hadn't had any, but when running Premiere they happen with consistence. I have had 4 of them in less than an hour. Seems like as soon as CUDA cuts in the issue is happened with the web driver. Basically I can't use Adobe (the main use for my machine) or I get the crashes. SHIT!

Still getting bad crashes on my MacPro, seems to be connected to NVIDIA card

Still getting nasty crashes, and seems to be with my GTX 670 4 GB in my 4,1 (firmware updated to 5,1) MacPro on Sierra 10.12.2. I am running Web Driver 367.15.10.25f01 and CUDA 8.0.57. From my included Crash Log it is looking like it is the Web Driver, and it crashed as soon as I started Premiere Pro 2017, though I seem to have been not having the previous noise crash running it, but am going to try switching back to the standard NVIDIA driver with Sierra and see if that works.

My MacPro 4,1 is having nasty crashes, and I don't know why





So my MacPro 4,1, which has been firmware updated to a 5,1 so it is running OS X Sierra is having some nasty crashes, where I get this crazy video noise and the machine is basically locked up. I have to do a hard shutdown.

The system has 32GB of RAM and it's system is running of an OWC SSD in the a PCI Slot. It also has a USB 3 card, a Black Magic Intensity Pro and a PC NVIDIA GTX 670 with 4GB of RAM.

It started crashing in Premiere Pro, and DaVinci resolve so I thought it was video card related, but lately has been crashing at any time.

First I ran Cocktail and it's full suite of Automation. Then I restarted and ran Diskwarrior 5.0 from it's USB, but that didn't fix much if anything. And I upgraded to Tech Tool Pro 9 and ran it's full suite, and everything passed, including the video card (and I ran it's test a few more times). Strangely it ran longer while in the E-Drive than it has lately on it's own, which makes me think something with the system, and yet this looks like a very hardware centric crash.

And the system install is very recent, in the last 6 months it was a totally clean install.

I am just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? I am hoping it isn't hardware. Be it Video Card, motherboard or power supply, but it is getting so I can't do anything without a crash.

I have posted on the Apple Forums, and have one response.

I have looked at the console log and the files at ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ and have not seen anything that would be causing this.

I do see that Expandrive is crashing all the time, which I know.

The New NVIDIA TITAN X is the King of the Hill!

That is an extra 1024 CUDA Cores for Adobe Creative Suite to play with, and an extra 4GB of faster RAM for not that much more power draw!

If you have been reading my posts, I have come to the realization that my next computer won't be a Mac, and have been looking at custom build PC's like Origin PC or Puget Systems. For a bit I was thinking that maybe 2 SLI GTX 1080's would be the answer for my CUDA needs, but that would basically eat all of my PCI slots. And I likely need some sort of Black Magic Design card to kick out video at least to an HD Monitor for editing, if not an Intensity Pro 4k. And while I can get a USB 3,1 external Raid for hard drives (as I likely won't get a ThunderBolt 3 Motherboard, unless I decide to build for myself), so I could live without a raid controller I would like need a Firefire PCI board to deal with my all my old hard drives until I can afford new enclosures.

So it looks like the new NVIDIA TITAN X would be my $1200 card of choice.

Trying to figure out what programs I will use if I move from Mac to PC

I have been talking about it for ages, and have used Apple Computers since I was 7 and got an Apple IIC. I love my Mac, but it getting old, and the next macOS Sierra has end of lifed my 4,1 MacPro. Luckily I can hack it to become a 5,1 with a simple firmware hack, so I can install Sierra, but it is likely the last Mac OS my computer will run. And big Adobe updates usually require the latest Mac OS. And the new "MacPro", the trashcan is a joke that has not been upgraded since it's release in 2013. It isn't upgradeable, nor can it have more than one harddrive internally, so it isn't pro. And it's use of a Xeon processor is not a boon. Xeon's are usually a few generations behind on technology, the big difference is that Xeon's don't have an integrated graphics processor (which doesn't affect you if you us a high end graphics card) and they 2 processors! But the trashcan can only use one! And yes it can have 12 cores (for an insane price), but i7's have now reached 8 or 10 cores and are newer tech, so why not use those if you are only using one processor. I really don't get it!

And yes I could build a Hackintosh, but I have been using a Quo at work,mand while it is great, upgrades are never too fun, and you must disable security features to even install El Capitan.

So it is looking like my next computer is a PC, cause I can put an NVIDIA Geforce 1080, but I need to figure out moving away from many of my current programs.

I know I can move iTunes to PC, though I hear it doesn't work as well on the PC, but my library and ratings will make it over.

I can export and move my mailboxes, browsers and the like pretty easily. There is nothing to easily move my Photos library to Windows, but I can import my Library into Adobe Lightroom and it will take my Keywords, then move to PC so it will work there. Pages and the whole iWorks suite is a pain as I need to open each file and save it out to word (hopefully I can automate it).

Making my web sites is more of a pain. I have used many programs over time, starting with Net Objects Fusion before it went Windows only, and I have even used Dreamweaver, though my HTML skills have gone to hell, and I don't want to code anymore. So currently I use Rapidweaver, which makes it easy and I have 2 different web sites for me and my mom's web site, which can link to much web site content. Now I am starting to look at Adobe Muse as an alternative, but I am not sure it will easily plug into all the content I currently use, from YouTube, Vimeo, 500px, or Flickr, so sites you can easily upload things and have them automatically show up on your web site. And it looks like there is no way to embed my blogger blog into muse, as I have done with Rapidweaver. Might be able to do my self hosted wordpress, but not my blogger blogs. Damn!

Then I will of course have to figure out a bunch of other programs, and especially system tweaking, and a new backup system, as I can't use time machine anymore.

It is surprising to me how little info there is online for moving from Mac to PC. Any info or even programs to help seem to be made to go the other way.

Oh well, when it happens I will likely be running both machines for a while, until I am sure everything is moved over.

And I am sure I will miss my Mac in many ways as I have Windows 10 in parallels and bootcamp on my mac, but it works, and honestly is a more pro system nowdays.

OneRiver Media on NVIDIA GTX 1080 being death nell of high end Mac Graphics

NVIDIA recently announced the GTX 1080, which is half the price ($699) of it's Titan, twice as fast and draws less power.

Marco Solorio of OneRiver Media talks about the NVIDIA GTX 1080 being the end of the MacPro as a high end graphics and editing system, since there is no longer a PCI based Mac! I do agree. The old PCI based MacPro will only last so much more, and it is already so far behind on modern technology.

So while I would prefer to run a Mac and OS X, I don't want the ridiculous Trashcan MacPro, and I want 2 GTX 1080's for a video card (or theoir version of a Titan), and hell I want the Microosft Surface Book as a laptop. Apple is pushing me away from the computer I love!

Message now works on my Mac and all it took was resetting my PRAM! Some NVIDIA weirdness though.

I can't believe I had not tried that, but Apple support got me and now Messages works in El Capitan

There was some strangeness though, and it is to do with my NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670 I mentioned in my previous post. After resetting the PRAM the computer came back up, but all the blue was orange again, and this time I took screenshots, but they looks correct once the problem is fixed! And to fix the issue I had to re-install the latest NVIDIA web drivers, though they were showing as already installed. Next time I will take a physical picture.

10.11.2 El Capitan update did not require NVIDIA web driver to boot (though it looks crazy)

I run a NVIDIA GTX 670 with 4 GB of RAM in my MacPro, and it is not flashed. So when I update the system I have to use VNC to sign into my Mac and update the NVIDIA Web drivers and restart before my Mac shows anything on the monitors (or I have to swap my old GTX 270 and do the Update).

This seems to have changed with 10.11.2. In fact it showed the updating screen before the Desktop, and then came to the desktop. Of course it was not normal, in fact all Blue Colors were Orange! I wish I had though to take screen shots, as after the update I upgraded the NVIDIA web driver and restarted and everything was back to normal.

This is awesome news if this continues in the future, as it makes it much easier to upgrade to the latest NVIDIA web driver. I hope it just wasn't a fluke.

OneRIver Media Blog on upgrading a 2009 MacPro to it's fullest potential

One River Media Blog has an awesome article on fully upgrading a 2009, 4,1 MacPro to it's fullest potential to make it rival the new trashcan MacPro.

This involves replacing the processors with Dual 6 CPU's which you can now get for around $650 (or less for a slightly slower model) installing dual SSD's for a startup drive, an NVIDIA Titan X with 12 GB of Video RAM, 64 GB of 1333MHz RAM, 2 6TB internals and a 4TB internal. This is all doable for around $4000, much cheaper than a new Trashcan Macpro with the added bonus of an NVIDIA graphics card VS the unupgradeable ATI graphics cards in the new MacPro.

Honestly if I had the money this is what I would love to do with my Mac! It would give me years more life with my Mac and really make it fast!

Bare Feats compared the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 with 10 other GPU's in a 2010 Mac Pro


Not only does this card us standard six pin connectors so it will work fine in the MacPro, but in many tests it doubles the performance of a GTX 680 Mac edition! WOW!

If I had the money I would totally go for one of these, since it is literally twice as fast as the GTX 680 Mac Edition, and I currently run a GTX 670, though it does have 4 GB of RAM.

I WANT ONE SO BAD!!! Ha! Not happening anytime soon.

Your best bet for one is this one from MacVidCards which is $835 plus shipping, the cards has been flashed for Mac so you get the full startup with it (which I annoyingly don't have with my GTX 670).

NVIDIA GTX Titan Z released



So NVIDIA's new flagship GeForce GTX Titan Z has been released, and as I have said before it is a beast! A dual Titan Card with 5760 CUDA cores! Damn I want to see how this would run on Premiere Pro. Probably only be able to use One Core for now, but if you could use the other to run your monitors, that would rock! Still $3000, youch!

Makes me want to build a PC for my next editing machine. Still can't believe the new MacPro's make me want a PC!

NVIDIA announces next gen Pascal GPU's and $3000 Titan Z Graphics Card

PC World has this exciting news.

Pascal will use NVLink, to enhance the PCI connection between cards, and allow for 5x to 12x speeds over PCI Express. And with 3D stacking of chips to increase bandwidth between components we will have serious powerhouses here.

And the Titan Z has 12GB of memory and 5760 CUDA Cores! Wow, think of the CUDA accelerated editing with that! And Pascal will be even faster than that. AWESOME.

And this is why it was insane for Apple to give up on user expandable PCI Express cards in their computers. By limiting graphics to only specific AMD cards they have done their customers a huge disservice, and this is likely why I will end up with a PC someday.

NVIDIA has updated the Titan to the Titan Black

After updating the GTX 700 series, NVIDIA needed to put the Titan back on top, and it has with the Black!

With 2880 CUDA cores and 6 GB of 7.0 Gbps Speed Memory this thing should fly! It can perform single precision at 5.1 TFLOPS and double precision at 1.3TFLOPS so should be beating the GTX 780i for professional applications.

Personally I was hoping my next computer had 2 of these, and certainly not AMD cards!

NVIDIA releases Quadro, GeForce for OS X drivers

Macnn is reporting that NVIDIA has updated it's graphics card drivers, but you need CUDA 5.5.28 to work with them.

I tried installing them in my MacPro with a PC NVIDIA Geforce 670 and it wouldn't restart, had to zap the PRAM, so be careful with these!

Todd Kopriva has announced the release of NVIDIA Cuda Drivers 5.5.47. You can download them from the CUDA control panel or NVIDIA's CUDA site.

Apple Updates iMacs with Haswell Processors and NVIDIA 7 Series GPU's

Apple has once again updated it's iMacs, now with Haswell Processors, PCI SSD cards and NVIDIA 7 series GPU's!. Now that the MacPro is going fully AMD only, people wanting CUDA will have iMacs as their main option, as you can go up to a GTX 780M with 4GB of GDDR5 Memory. Would rather have a non-mobile version of the processor, but these should still rock for CUDA.

If only APPLE would relent and release a MacPro that is actually expandable, and doesn't use just thunderbolt for expansion, but that is unlikely to happen. Thinking a hackintosh looks more and more likely in my Future!

Flash a PC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 to the Mac Edition

Oh the irony, since the new MacPro will leave out the awesome NVIDIA graphics cards completely. Check out the article at FCP.CO, which actually says it is to speed up FCPX and Motion, though is actually more about the upgrade and flashing the card.

He even used a PC model like my 670 (though I did a 670 because of possible power issues with a 680, so though the Mac Version would be safer), though he was able to flash it into the Mac version so he gets the boot screen.

And honestly this is better for Adobe software as you get great CUDA support with it.

FXGuide has the news on this awesome new video card.  2880 CUDA cores and 12 GB of memory! A workstation class card if there ever was one. Way too expensive for normal use though!

The Edit Doctor on NVIDIA Quadro Performance speeds with Premiere CC and my worries on new MacPro

The EditDoctor has an interesting article on how recent NVIDIA drivers have literally doubled the performance of Quadro's for Premiere Pro.

And this is why I worry about the new MacPro. OpenCL acceleration is not nearly as fast as CUDA on the PC, and the Mac has always had a far inferior OpenCL installation. Multi GPU's are incredibly hard to code for and only give moderate performance enhancements on even the most mutli-GPU aware games on the PC, so they are only for the most hard core of gamers. The only exception to this is a Maximus configuration from NVIDIA which is a Quadro with a TESTLA card (the non-consumer version of a Titan), which has incredible power and speed and really can use both processors. This all leaves the new MacPro in the code. Most software won't be coded for multiple AMD GPU's and even if they are the performance increases are usually pretty modest, and OpenCL can't touch CUDA! So why made a new "pro" machine without the option for CUDA? The only argument I can see if form over function, and that seems to be what the new MacPro is all about!

After Effects CC would not activate my GTX 670 4GB on my MacPro

Premiere Pro did it fine, but After Effects CC would not do it, and strangely the 670 isn't listed in supported GPU's but I got it to work.

First i booted as root, and was still having the same problem, so I decided to manually hack After Effects CC.

VidMuze has instructions for CS6 which worked for me in CS6, so i did them in CC or at least added the card name from CS6 and put it into the CC file. http://www.vidmuze.com/how-to-enable-gpu-cuda-in-adobe-cs6-for-mac/

Now my video card works in After Effects CC for Ray Trace.

Now it's time to re-install my plug-ins and hope they all work. Red Giant as already updated their installers to work with CC.

Beware of NVIDIA web driver 313.01.01! Took my machine down for a day!

Yesterday I saw that NVIDIA had released a new web driver , 313.01.01, and was hoping it would help my Geforce GTX 670, but instead it caused a cascade of failures and kept me down for a whole day!

Installation went fine. bit on restart the computer would not come up. Eventually I had to put my old Geforce GTX 275 back into my Mac so I could use option and boot into my edrive or the emergency partition (both of which I had to use). First off even with the GTX 275 the computer would not boot at all, not in single user mode or even safe mode (well I honestly stopped Safe Mode after about 2 hours, it was still moving, but going so slow I didn't think it would boot.

And even emergency mode was trouble, because my external OWC 3TB backup drive, no longer mounted, so I couldn't do a restore from my Time Machine partition! And I didn't want to try and re-install the system over the old system, just in case, so I had to go to Best buy and get a new Hard Drive.

DId you know that the new Seagate Barracuda drives in fact don't say Barracuda anywhere on the box? It just stays Desktop, though the drive still says Barracuda! WTF?!?!?!??!

So I got that drive home and re-installed a fresh install of OS X on it, and then had it take my old user and settings from the old drive, which after about 5 hours worked just fine (though I had to move the drive internally as it wasn't working from my external USB housing for some reason).

After everything was in place (including my slow finder) i reinstalled my GTX 670 and the machine rebooted just fine, and even stranger now has the NVIDIA control panel installed, but not the new driver.

I could immediately see the menu bar item for the new control panel.

And when I opened the control panel it informed me that yes that driver is incompatible with my system! YES NO KIDDING! So what systems is it for?

I just wished it realized the Web Driver was not compatible before it installed it before, as it took down my whole system! And I had to buy a new hard drive to get it up and running again!

Improved GPU SUpport in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

Adobe has posted a blog about the "significantly improved Mercury Playback Engine" in Premiere Pro Creative Cloud.

It claims that the 64 Bit Architechture, the massively multi-threaded CPU optimization allow you to work without a great GPU, but with one is where things really shine, as we all know. And I love that you can enable a not officially supported card within the program without searching out the card name and modifying files. You can also use multiple GPU's for export though not for playback.

Renderosity has a review on the NVIDIA QUADRO K4000. Not as powerful as the much more expensive K5000, but more powerful than the previous 5000. And a single slot card, so possibly a good solution to use with a TESLA.

NVIDIA GTX 780 and 770 Coming May 23rd

At least according to Fudzilla. And they have more info as well. It seems they are slower than the Titan, and are in fact internally known as the Titan LE. The 780 should be 30% faster than the 680 and the 770 should be 20-25% faster than the 670.

NVIDIA creating a line of TITAN cards

Maximum PC is reporting that NVIDIA is going to produce a whole line of TITAN cards.

There will be a higher end Titan Ultra:

This SKU will reportedly utilize all of the GK110’s 15 SMX clusters, giving it an edge over the regular Titan which has one cluster disabled with a total of 2,688 CUDA cores and 240 TMUs. As as result, the Titan Ultra will boast the full quota of 2880 shader cores and 256 texture units. Further, as opposed to the original’s 837 MHz clock speed and 206-Watt power appetite, the Ultra will have a 950 MHz clock speed and a 225W TDP

And a TITAN LE:

it will reportedly have 2496 CUDA cores, 208 TMUs, 40 ROPs, 320-bit DDR memory interface, 5 GB of GDDR5 and a 180-190W TDP

I would totally love an ULTRA TItan, as that is just a sick amount of CUDA.

Bare Feats has posted a part 2 to it's EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 680 Review with Professional Apps

Bare Feats has posted it's second part of it's Geforce GTX 680 Review and the results are mostly good. It does get beat in Cinema 4D and Motion 5 by the GTX 680MX in the top of the line iMac, but that is likely because of the older hardware and buss speed of the now ancient MacPro over the newer hardware in the iMac. Still it does win for DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, and Octane. Hopefully it would really whoop ass in a new MacPro if that ever happens.

Awesome to have the choice now and not have to get something off of ebay that is many generations old!

Barefeats speed test the EVGA NVIDIA Geforce GTX 680 Mac Edition and it is good!

Barefeats has some speed tests and things are looking good for gaming, though I would like to see some Premiere Pro and After Effects Speed tests (especially with the Quadro 5000K in the tests).

Now if only Apple would allow more than 2GB of RAM (yes I know the QUADRO 5000K has 4GB of RAM, but you still have to hack your mac to get a PC NVIDIA card to run that has more than 2GB of RAM).

NVIDIA Releases the GTX Titan

I read about this amazing new video card in Maximum PC magazine.


This is the CUDA leap editors have been looking for without having to invest in the super expensive QUADRO line. Based on the Kepler GK110 instead of the GK104, this single processor card has twice the transistors and almost double the CUDA of the GTX 680! The GK110 are the chips used in the TESLA K20X GPU.

2688 CUDA cores in 14 SMX unites and 6GB of GDDR5 memory at 6GHz and a clock speed of 836MHz with a boost to 876Mhz and a 384 bit memory interface! Damn! And for $999. It also has GPU boost which will let you overclock it and have it change performance based on heat!

You can check it out over at NVIDIA's home page as well. And Maximum PC has released Benchmarks as well, which show it not as fast as the dual processor GTX 690, though for a single CPU it is faster (though they are the same price), but it will likely be better for CUDA for NVIDIA which at least on a Mac can't deal with the 2 processors of the GTX 690, though of course we can only hope to get this running on a Mac anyway!

EVGA Announces GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition!

Macnn has the news on this exciting new video card for macs! And EVGA has it's page up on this monster. Finally a great Mac video card for a reasonable price. It has 1536 CUDA cores, 2GB of GDDR5 RAM and an HDMI, Display Port, and 2 DVI connections, and Newegg is claiming it comes out APril 8th for $600. Must have solved the power issue, as usually the 680's require 8 pin power and draw more than a MacPro can handle, which is why I have an EVGA GTX 670 in my mac.

Obviously they have not gotten around the Apple enforced 2 GB limit on Video cards, which is why I had to hack my machine to get my 4GB card running, but hopefully it does mean better video drivers for the 6 series Kepler cards! Woohoo! Should give me a performance boost for sure!

Arstechnica on new NVIDIA 700M GPUs

Arstechnica has an article on the NVIDIA 700M GPU's, which NVIDIA announced yesterday.

And basically it sounds like the the new NVIDIA GPU's are the same as the 600M series, but with some slightly higher clock speeds, and a new GPU Boost 2.0, though these are all the lower end versions, and they haven't talked about the higher end versions as of yet.

More speed is always good, and faster CUDA even better, but I would rather see a new series be a new architecture than just a speed bump.

Renderosity Reviews the NVIDIA QUADRO K5000

Renderosity has a great review of the NVIDIA QUADRO K5000 from a graphics perspective. The only thing I would like to see is something like a Geforce 670, 680 or 690 instead of a GTX 480 as the comparison to a standard card, as I would like to see it's performance against another Kepler card, one for gaming and one for workstation graphics and see the difference there.

Engadget has the announcement of 3 new QUADRO cards from NVIDIA based on Kepler to fill the space over the $2500+ K5000. They have the K4000 for $1300, the K2000 for $600 and the K600 for $200. Nice. Not for gaming, but great for 3D and architectural and video work.

I Am Film Guy on Moving from Mac to HP

I AM FILM GUY has a good article on moving from Mac to HP.

I still worry about articles like this as it seems like they may be payed or getting gear for free (you can never tell), and they never go into the OS differences of moving from Mac to Windows, but you never know. I have been seriously considering the switch because Windows machines are so much newer and CUDA support so much better.

I thought about a Puget Systems custom system though.

Who knows, maybe the next MacPro will change my mind, if it ever comes out.

Kotaku has an article on the newly announced NVIDIA Geforce GTX Titan Video Card! With 2688 CUDA cores, 6 GB of Video RAM and the same processor as the NVIDIA Tesla G20X this would be a Premiere Pro dream card for $1000! Sure a MacPro couldn't couldn't power it, but we can always dream!

StudioDaily on Dells over MacPros

StudioDaily has an article on editors picking Dell Computers over MacPro's for editing, which may in fact be true (though the article is written by someone working for Dell), as the MacPro has basically stagnated for years now, but I also hate how they never bother upgrading a MacPro with more modern technology for speed tests. Like putting in a PC NVIDIA Geforce 675 GTX with 4GB of RAM. That will make a huge difference in speed, especially with CUDA compliant software like Premiere Pro or Black Magic's DaVinci Resolve! It may not be a TESLA, but it also doesn't come with the price, which could set you back well over $6000 for a QUADRO and a TESLA, vs under $500 for a GTX 675 which works with the Mac's current power supply and can really upgrade your existing MacPro.

Now of course their is still the question of what Apple's next MacPro will be like and if it will be a worthy and powerful successor to the current MacPro, but we won't know till it comes out, hopefully at this years WWDC.

Review of NVIDIA Geforce GTX 680m Graphics Card

I have been interested in the new top of the line Graphics Card for the new 2012 iMac, which is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 680mx, and was wondering how it faired against my Desktop GTX 670. Everyone has been claiming it makes the iMac the most powerful Mac Editing machine out there, but I doubted it, as I have not seen any speed test against equivalent graphics cards. The 680m is actually a 680 slowed down.

I found a EuroGamer review of the GTX 680m, which tells me what I wanted to know about a 680M, but not a 680MX, but I found a review of that at Notebook Check.

Here is some of what they have to say:

Compared to the GeForce GTX 680M, the GTX 680MX features 1536 instead of 1344 CUDA cores and higher memory clocks (720/2500MHz vs 720/1800 MHz)


the graphics performance of the GeForce GTX 680MX should be 15 - 25 percent above the GTX 680M and similar to the Desktop GTX 580.

So the iMac has more CUDA cores, but it's speed is not as fast, and it's memory speed is less than half the speed.

So basically the 680MX it is a really powerful mobile graphics chip, but not as powerful as it's equivalent Desktop GPU the GTX 670, and is more in line to a last generation GTX 580.

And yes it is not the easiest thing in the world getting a new generation NVIDIA card running in your MacPro, but it is not that hard, but should put your speed above that of the top of the line iMac GPU, and have more processing power, making it still champion, even though it is such dated technology at this point. Have to love expandability though as an old machine can still hold a performance edge, which is something the iMac will never have.

Lets just hope Apple makes a really good new MacPro this year.

13" MacBook Pro with Retina, not for Editing


Apple today released the 13" MacBookPro with Retina Display. And unlike it's 15" Cousing which sports an NVIDIA Geforce GT 650m and a Intel HD Graphics 4000, the 13 model only has the Intel HD Graphics 4000, which means no CUDA support for Premiere Pro editing, and certainly not as good graphics.

It is still an impressive little machine, but not really a solution for editors.

It starts at $1699 and is shipping today.

I wouldn't want one, as the 15" would be much more conducive to editing.

FCP.Co on installing a PC GTX570 in a MacPro

FCP.Co has an article on installing a PC GTX570 in a MacPro to get better OpenCL performance in FCP X, but it will also increase your CUDA power for Premiere Pro and After Effects CS6.

Still you can score over 1000 on Luxmark if you go for a GTX670 instead (which has a huge amount more of CUDA cores, and can still draw it's power from the internal power supply instead of say a 680, which would require an external power source to run), but they are not as well supported on the Mac. Either way you will need to go to Netkas to get some instruction and some help (though some of the help can be rather surly, but it is worth it if can really beef up using your MacPro). Someone at Netkas has also figure out how to Firmware update recent MacPro's to the latest firmware for the newest itineration, allowing beefier XEON's into your old MacPro.

The instructions are pretty easy, but I have found that they don't always work, so think about re-installing your NVIDIA drivers once you are done, as that did it for me.

You will also need to do some hacking to Premiere Pro and After Effects to get them working with the CUDA cores on a new video card.

NVIDIA releases new drivers for Mac

Adobe blogs has the story.


 If you have experienced crashes in Premiere Pro CS6 or later when using a qualified NVIDIA GPU, we strongly recommend you update to this new driver version, which should improve stability. The crashes were mostly seen when switching from OpenCL to CUDA or when tabbing from other applications back to Premiere Pro (most notably Safari).


It doesn't mention all the crashes I was having for other reasons, and general premiere pro instability, but hopefully this will cover it. And hopefully I can move back to my GeForce GTX275 from my Quadro 4800 as the 4800 just isn't fast.

Wonder if this improves Kepler card support? That would be awesome, though I doubt it.

Bare Feats has a DaVinci Resolve Speed Test on Mac

Bare Feats has a great speed test for DaVinci resolve on Mac. What I Find the most interesting is that last generation video cards from MacVidCards are beating out current generation GTX680 Fermi video cards, but that is likely a Mac Driver issue. They have some common drivers for the new cards thanks to the new MacBookPro, but don't have full drivers of yet (still cool that many PC NVIDIA cards will run).

NVIDIA announces Kepler based Quadro K5000 GPU for Mac Pro!!!! This is huge for CUDA users!

Arstechnica has the news on this HUGE announcement. The K5000 is the replacement for the QUADRO 5000 and runs at $2249. You check it out at NVIDIA as well.

Built around NVIDIA's latest "Kepler" architecture, the double-wide card boasts 1536 processing cores shuffling pixels at up to 173GB/s along a 256-bit path to 4GB of GDDR5 memory. The card supports Shader Model 5.0, Open GL 3.2 on Mac OS X, and Open GL 4.3 and DirectX 11 when running Windows under BootCamp. And, it can support up to four monitors: two running at 2560x1600 over dual-link DVI ports, and two running up to 4096x2160 over DisplayPort 1.2. All that power also fits within an Energy Star-rated 122W power envelope.



This has serious CUDA performance and should be awesome for Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve 9.

Even more exciting for us not quite able to afford such a behometh card is that it signals some changes from Apple and Drivers. As you can actually run many Kepler cards now without much effort, since they included the drivers to deal with the NVIDIA powered MacBookPro and NVIDIA has started just writing a single driver for all cards in a series instead of different drivers. The thing is as of now you can only see 2GB of RAM on a card without doing some fiddling, which is an arbitrary addition made by Apple. The 4GB of RAM in this card looks like this will soon change for the better. And hopefully we get some Kepler GeForce cards running at full power on the mac soon. Like a GeForce GTX 680 (which matches the 1536 CUDA cores of the QUADRO) with slightly higher memory bandwidth.

Any way you look at this it is good news for high end mac graphics as it looks like NVIDIA is back and here to stay.

NVIDIA admits issues with CUDA 5.0.17 and 5.0.24 driver with Premiere Pro

From Todd Kopriva at Adobe. And over at NVIDIA. Causes crashes when going from Safari to Premiere Pro.

  • There is a known issue in this release where forcing or allowing the system to go to sleep while running CUDA applications on 2012 MacBook Pro models with automatic graphics switching will cause a system crash (kernel panic). You can prevent the computer from automatically going to sleep by setting the Computer Sleep option slider to Never in the Energy Saver pane of the System Preferences.
  • There is a known issue in this release where CUDA applications will not automatically engage the discrete GPU on 2012 MacBook Pro models with automatic graphics switching. To run CUDA applications, it is necessary to uncheck the Automatic Graphics Switching checkbox in the Energy Saver pane of the System Preferences.

Hmm, doesn't sound like the same issue that I have been having, but hopefully it is similar, and accounts for the Premiere Pro instability.

Installed a PC NVIDIA KEPLER GTX670 Video Card in my MacPro for CUDA editing power

While I have an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 275 Mac Edition, it is very much old tech with only 240 CUDA cores for working with Premiere Pro. And it is about the fastest there is (other than a QUADRO 4000, but even that is old tech compared to current PC video card technology).

One solution is MacVidCards and their Ebay Site. These guys flash GTX 5xx series videos card with Apple Firmware so that you get full functionality on a Mac, including boot screens and EFI (so if you hold down option you can select hard drives, or go into the terminal before you hit the desktop). This is a great and easy solution for most people, though it leaves out Kepler video cards, the GTX 6xx series cards that are the latest and greatest with the most CUDA cores for real time playback in Premiere Pro.

As of Mountain Lion putting in a GTX 6xx series or Kepler has gotten a lot easier. This is because Mac OS X and the latest NVIDIA drivers now include drivers for the MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display which is has Geforce GT 650m, so there is now some Kepler support in OS X. This means that PC Kepler cards will run in Mountain Lion, with a couple of caveats. One is you don't get the boot screens, because the video drivers don't kick in until just before the desktop shows up. The second is that due to a setting in OS X you can only have up to 2GB of RAM in a video card, if you have more you won't get OpenCL acceleration. It is on this point that the excellent Netkas site comes in. Netkas has figured out multiple methods to make 6xx series NVIDIA cards with over 2GB of RAM work on a Mac.

Yes there are bigger cards with more CUDA cores, like the GTX 680, but it requires 8 pin power, and the Mac only supplies 6 pin power, so you will have to run an external power supply to get it to work, and the GTX 690 is basically 2 video cards in one, so the mac will have trouble using the dual cards, and you won't get the benefit (except in boot camp into Windows). Basically the 670 uses 2 6 pin power adapters, so your mac can power it. I picked up an EVGA Geforce GTX670 FTW+ 4096MB GDDR5 Graphics card and installed it.

There are the instructions for a GTX 670 and the instructions for the rest of the 6xxx series cards on how to get OpenCL working on a card with more than 2GB of RAM.

Now I had problems getting the GTX 670 instructions to work.

I started to a TechTool Pro Safety partition I have on a second drive and did the replacement and repaired permissions and OpenCL was not fixed. After much fiddling I couldn't figure it out, and having read elsewhere on the Netkas forums to also do the Hex edit, I also did the 32 and the ML Hex edit fixes, repaired permissions (A VERY IMPORTANT STEP AS YOUR COMPUTER MAY NOT BOOT IF YOU DON'T DO IT). I used the excellent HexEdit to edit the file.

I tried getting help on the forums, but was basically told how stupid I was and that I had done it wrong (which was not the case). Finally I decided to re-install the latest NVIDIA drivers and see if that did anything, and after restarting, I ran LuxMark (to test OpenCL speeds) and low and behold it now worked.

Honestly I am not sure if I just needed to do the Hex Edit only, as the instructions I saw at Netkas said to try the file replacement for the 670, or if it really did require me doing both to get OpenCL acceleration activated, but doing both certainly worked for me with the addition of re-installing the NVDIA Drivers.



The next step is now to enable CUDA for your new video card in Premiere Pro and After Effects CS6. VidMuze has an excellent video on how to do this, and a download file that gives specific instructions. This was simple in comparison to the hex file thing, which was not hard, but certainly not this easy, but this does require some terminal use, so you should be comfortable using the terminal in your mac.

I now have 1344 CUDA cores for Premiere Pro and After Effects, and am looking forward to taking Premiere Pro CS6 and the Mercury Playback engine for a spin with more than 5 times the CUDA cores, twice the RAM and a much faster and newer processor. I will let you know how it performs.

Premiere Pro CS6 having some serious issues with NVIDIA GTX 285

I started on a job today shot on a 5D and didn't have time to convert to ProRES, so I decided to cut it in Premiere Pro CS6 to save conversion time, plus since I have a compatible PluralEyes to sync off camera audio. It took a bit of time to do the sync, but after I watched my footage and then began cutting, but Premiere Pro could not have been more unstable. I crashed over and over, and was losing time and work. So much that I tried exporting to quicktime, but it was just going to take too long to render the timeline so I could edit.

I found this thread on the Adobe Forums, and found my exact problem.

I'm on a MacPro 4,1, Lion 10.7.4, CS6.0.1, 32GB RAM, GTX 285 with the latest nVidia and CUDA drivers.  I am seeing 2 primary issues:


 

Lots of Serious Error crashes.  This happens without any noticeable pattern - sometimes with the title tool, trim monitor, or simply just scrubbing the timeline.  It seems to happen more frequently with Dynamic Links in the timeline.  Also, I believe it is happening more often (or maybe exclusively)  with the MPE GPU option enabled.  I think in Software Only mode, it may not be present, although further testing required.


 

Also, I am having an issue where Pr will display black only in the source and program monitors, unless I click around the timeline and will get flashes of images.  This is remedied by changing over to Software Only for the MPE.  It seems to be worse if Safari is running.



I was having the same issues exactly, and have the same system setup, but with only 24 GB of RAM, and am running Mountain Lion 10.8.0. I kept having to trash my prefs which worked for about 5 minutes before I crashed again.

So I decided to remove the GTC285 and put in my QUADRO FX 4800. It is old and slow, but still pretty decent. I installed it about 2 hours ago, and Premiere Pro has been rock solid afterwards.

This shows it is either an NVIDIA driver or CUDA issue, or something in the Premiere Code with the GTX 285, as with the QUADRO FX 4800 it is running like a dream.

Adobe and NVIDIA need to fix this fast, because this is a major issue. If it was not for me having a spare video card I would have been SOL, as I have to finish this project and fast!

UPDATE: Had one crash after 3 and a half hours, but I have been saving now, back to the old paranoid saving all the time. Still unbelievable the difference with the different video card!

UPDATE AGAIN: And crashed again! OK, so not rock solid, but still much better than it was with the GTX 285.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 is unofficially supported in MacPro

Tej's Tech Blog has a post on installed an NVIDIA GTX 570 PC card into a MacPro and it seems to work except for EFI (so it goes straight to desktop or login screen, you don't see the spinning ball at the start. Guess you can't do safe mode or boot to another drive then from startup, though not positive on that).

You will have to do some Terminal tricks to get the Adobe suite to see it as compatible as the card is not listed for Mac, but it can be done.

This is great news. Wonder if NVIDIA is going towards one driver for all their cards, or if it means that Apple is planning to include NVIDIA if and when it ever updates the MacPro?

No matter what, more NVIDIA support for Macs is a good thing. And it is great that the new MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro Retina are run by NVIDIA cards, as more CUDA support means more realtime with the Adobe Suite.

Netkas Forums got a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 working in a MacPro

Now this is some seriously exciting news at Hardmac, it seems the members at Netkas forums using the new mac NVIDIA drivers for the MacPro have managed to get an NVIDIA GeForve GTX 680 running in a MacPro.

Now lets hope that Mountain Lion come with drivers and new cards are released, or are at least hackable to work, because I want a new video card in a big way!

Maximum PC on NVIDIA Tease

Maximum PC has an article on a recent NVIDIA tease on Facebook, saying It’s Coming!

Swedish overclocking site SweClockers.com (as translated and explained by VideoCardz.com) says that "independent sources" claim that "it" is the GeForce GTX 690, the long-rumored video card that theoretically sports two, count 'em, two of the GK104 Kepler GPUs found in the GTX 680, 4GB of GDDR5 memory, 3072 CUDA cores and a pair of 8-pin connectors. That, kiddies, would be one heck of a polygon-pumping beast.



Now this may be a gaming card, but 3072 CUDA cores would be a beast for Premiere Pro! Makes me want a PC for editing!

Next MacPro 16 Core and NVIDIA Graphics?

Macnn is reporting on the latest set of rumors on a new MacPro, and lets hope it is true, and Apple is staying committed to the pro market in at least it’s hardware.

They would be powered by the new Ivy Bridge 22 nanometer Xeon processors which can have 8 cores and 20MB cache, making for 16 core machines, with 32 virtual machines. And even more exciting to me is the possibility of returning to NVIDIA and their soon to released Kelper hardware. This would mean CUDA acceleration in Adobe Premiere, and hopefully the next generation Quadros being released for the mac. This could mean that Jobs fued with NVIDIA is over. Wouldn’t that rock!

NVIDIA Open Sources CUDA

MaximumPC is reporting that NVIDIA has open sourced the new CUDA LLVM based Compiler.

This means that people will be able to port other programing languages or port CUDA to other platforms like AMD’s or Intel’s. The others have used OPEN CL, but it is not as robust as CUDA, which is why Adobe is so reliant on CUDA for acceleration, and it is hopefully that which will push CUDA to go across all platforms.

Will Apple return to NVIDIA for Laptops?

Applinsider is reporting a rumor that Apple is set to return to NVIDIA for the next round of MacBook Pro’s. This would be great news for editors who have made the switch to Premiere Pro after the whole Final Cut Pro X debacle! I just hope the 17” adds the top of the line GeForce GTX 580M. That would be a pretty bad ass CUDA machine, and with a thunderbolt port could be a pretty serious editing system.

If this happens, maybe you will even be able to get an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 for the MacPro (if they release one more MacPro system at least), it won’t top an SLI system for CUDA, but would be a pretty serious CUDA system.

One can only hope!

What PC to replace a MacPro if MacPros go away as rumored

I have doing research into what PC could replace a MacPro is Apple does abandon the MacPro which seems more likely with Apple’s complete shift to consumer. I had previously edited on the kick ass HP workstations, but would no longer trust them, with their waffling on the entire PC division.

Well I found these guys that create custom machines for editing.
Puget Systems looks like the way to go. Especially if you go the completely Custom Liquid Cooled route.

Personally I think I would go with the new Core i7’s instead of Xeons (I love being able to have multiple CPU’s for rendering in After effects, but the price is ridiculous). And you can get a kick ass GeForce card for a grand with a huge amount of CUDA cores.



Now I want to see a test of a TESLA VS a highe end GeForce doing CUDA!

Adobe and Nvidia Ray Trace in AE

The Pro Video Coalition has an article on a joint NVIDIA Adobe research project on doing ray traced 3D within After Effects, and it looks amazing. I just hope it will work with my GeForce GTX 285, or that NVIDIA will come out with a new better CUDA card available in Mac. I would consider a 4000, but it barely work with Lion or Apple products at this point, and is already a generation behind.

Let’s hope this gets integrated into After Effects soon! Realtime 3D would be amazing.

Premiere in Lion Update

Well my issue with Premiere and Lion is certainly a CUDA issue. NVIDIA released a new CUDA driver, 4.0.21, but it does not solve the issue. The only way to get Premiere Pro to boot is to remove the CUDA.framework from my Library, and then Premiere boots, but with software only acceleration making my GeForce completely useless. Lets hope they get on this quick!

Larry Jordan has a nice post on Accountability

Larry Jordan has a good blog post on how Apple is not accountable to anyone for the disaster of it’s Final Cut Pro X release.


And it really is true. No is accountable, and Apple would hold everyone accountable if things were revered. Nvidia made one mistake and look they have not been in a mac since, and we the users are punished by Apple for it (having to put our ATI cards back in for major upgrades and then re-install the NVIDIA drivers).


I am knee deep into learning Premier Pro (after trying, but giving up on FCP X) and am pretty impressed by many features (especially the XML export being able to do the whole project with all sequences), but can’t see why this was even necessary! I can see that Apple might have wanted to cement their lead in the future, but not at the expense of their entire installed user base who are going to bad mouth the hell out of their new product until they make something useful.


And why buy Color, just to kill it a few years later? Or why kill Shake? Why did they not spin off their entire pro-division like they did with FileMaker Pro? Make a business unit that is answerable to it’s base. and needs to make a product that it’s customers want!


I am left shaking my head.

Honestly I have never seen performance like this

OK, so the same 4 video clips in Canon 60D H.264 on the timeline and I put Magic Bullet Colorista 2 on one, and did a color correct, and then played back in real time! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHY DIDN’T I TRY THIS EARLIER! AMAZING!!!!!!

Sure adding an effect on a second clip basically slowed it down too much and I had to render, but I never thought it would work that well. Wow!

Color me impressed

OK, that is the most responsive timeline I have ever seen.

I just ran my first Premiere Pro 5.5 Cuda test with an NVIDIA QUADRO FX 4800. I imported some RAW Canon 60D H.264 footage, and put it in a timeline, scaled it 50% and added 3 more shots, and it played back smoother and fast than any timeline I have ever seen. Color me impressed.

Premiere might not just replace Final Cut Pro, it might blow it out of the water!
