Color Correction Test with DJI OSMO+, Canon 60D and iPhone 6S and Visual Effects of Gun Shots

I shot some test footage with 3 of my cameras, my DJI OSMO+ my Canon 60D and my iPhone 6S. I color corrected the footage using DaVinci Resolve 12.5 and did the Visual Effects in Adobe After Effects.

The visual effects include adding the gun shots, light flashes, and color correcting the orange tip of my gun so it is gray.

I was trying to show my ability to color match the footage from such different 3 cameras, as well as add the visual effects to make an interesting little sequence.

Let me know what you think!

PVC on Canon EOS 7D Mark II and it's video capabilities.

Jose Antunes at the Pro Video Coalition has more on the newly announced Canon EOS 7D Mark II and especially focusing on it's video capabilities.

Basically saying it is a baby EOS 1D X without 4K capabilities, but with the ability to record in MOV or MP4 and 3 compression settings, either IBP, ALL-I or Light IPB.

Very exciting for video, and can't wait to see what Magic Lantern can do with it.

Canon announces EOS 7D Mark II

Canon Rumors has the story on this impressive new camera.

20.2 Megapixel APS-C Camera with up to 16000 ISO with CF and SD, and USB 3 as well as GPS.

Magic Lantern can give a canon EOS 5D Mark 3 14 Stops of Dynamic Range

Planet 5D has the news on this one, where you can now give the Canon Eos 5D Mark 3 14 Stops of Dynamic Range. Pretty damn impressive!

Canon EOS 70D DSLR Announced

PhotoRumors has the story on the newly released Canon EOS 70D
. It is $1199 for the body, $1349 with an 18-55mm and $1549 for an 18-135MM. 20.2 Megapixels, with built in WIFI and the swing out lens of it's predecessor. And Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus while you shoot video. And can shoot at 7 fps in still mode!

This sounds like an awesome replacement for the 60D! If only it had RAW Record built in! And lets hope Canon didn't block MagicLantern's access to the very cool new RAW features they have found!

Canon EOS-M Rumored to have new firmware with 2.3 times faster Auto Focus!

Photo Rumors has the news. Lets hope it's true. I so want one of these, though it needs to come with the EOS lens adapter for it's price, and this faster auto focus would certainly help with many people's complaints.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Magic Lantern VS Blackmagic Cinema Camera RAW

Planet 5D has a video comparison of the 2 cameras.

Which Canon DSLR's can do RAW with Magic Lantern?

Cinema 5D has an article on all the cameras this works with and what can be achieved.

Sad that the Canon EOS 50D can do higher quality than my 60D which can only manage 960x540 because of it's slower storage.

EOS 5D Mark 3 RAW also includes 3x Zoom Mode!

Planet 5D posted this tidbit that seems to get left out by most, that Magic Bullet can do with the RAW mode, which is to make it a 3x zoom by changing the crop factor on the sensor! AWESOME!

Planet 5D has tons of footage from the Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 RAW!

Planet 5D has a ton of RAW footage from the Canon EOS 5D Mark 3! Nice!

Why Magic Lantern RAW Video is the best thing to happen to Canon

DIY Photography on why Magic Lantern RAW for the Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 is the best thing to happen to Canon!

Magic Lantern pulls 24p RAW video Out of Canon 5D Mark III

This story is all over the web, but Petapixel had it right away. A new alpha of Magic Lantern has managed to get 1920x850 RAW video at 24P out of the camera, and it looks much better than the H.264 compressed video and it sounds like it may be better than the Black Magic Camera. As you can see from this Planet5D post on the subject, and you can see their post on the subject as well.

And you can really get into this with the EOS HD post on it.

I am sure that Canon doesn't want this, as they want you to buy their cine EOS cameras to get RAW capabilities, but it is awesome that Magic Lantern has been able to pull this off!

The Canon 5D Mark III gets a fIrmware update to 1.21

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III
has gotten a firmware update to 1.21, FX Guide has the news.

This is exciting as it enables uncompressed HDMI output! So you get uncompressed 4:2:2 8 bit video to an external recorder! And with it's anti-aliasing this becomes a powerful video camera! Still not the EOS-1D C, but still pretty amazing.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i and EOS Rebel SL1

Cheesycam has the news on the new Rebel level EOS cameras the T5i and the very small Canon EOS Rebel SL1 both of which shoot full HD video, though certainly without the full HD out of the new 100D and 700D.

Canon releases EOS 100D and 700D

Cinescopophilia has the news on these new DSLR's that can shoot 24 fps for up to 22 minutes. They also mention HDMI mini output wiht full high definition, which if true is huge, as it will bypass the crappy h.264 compression.

I didn't expect to have 2 S lens cameras released at the same time. Pretty cool.

Canon EOS-B Leaked

Canon Rumors has the leaked info on the new tiny EOS-b DSLR.

Interesting. I like the idea of such a small DSLR, especially if it has full HD recording and for $799 body only.

EOS M firmware won't improve Autofocus

Canon Rumors has the update, and it seems it will take new hardware to make the Autofocus better on the EOS M.

I would love an EOS M that really works well and has video capabilities as a second camera to go with my 60D, but be a little easier and more portable, but I don't want a camera that doesn't work right, so hopefully the sequel will be better. And honestly it should come with the lens adapter to use normal canon glass as that is the best feature and it should not cost $200 more for that feature.

Philip Bloom reviews the 4K Canon EOS 1D-C

The Cinematographer Philip Bloom has an in depth review of the Canon EOS 1D-C. The video is 35 minutes long and worth checking out.

Canon released 2 new Cine Lenses at CES

Photo Rumors has the news from CES on the new 14mm t3.1 and 135 t2.2 lenses. And around $5000 each. Still out of my price range, but very reasonable, just wish they were a little faster!

Canon 6D has Moire issues over 5D Mark III

Petapixel has an article and video that show the moire issues. Looks like the 6D is great for stills, but not so great for video, especially as an alternative to the 5D Mark III.

My 60D and the 7D already have the moire issue, so it still would be an improvement over them, but it sucks that they didn't put the downsampling of the 5D Mark III, and instead went back to the cheaper and easier Line skipping which causes the issue to begin with.

FilmMaker IQ on 20 new Camera Pockets guides from Black and Blue

Saw this one at Filmmaker IQ. You can get them at The Black and Blue, which are simple folder pocket guides for 20 cameras in use now. It is $15.00 for all 20 guides.

New Canon EOS Mark III Firmware will have uncompressed HDMI out!

Planet 5D has the news on this new firmware update, which will skip the terrible h.264 compression we have all gotten used to with DSLR's and have uncompressed HDMI out. I know it will never happen for my 60D (unless someone reverse engineers it), but this is certainly exciting.

The update also includes upgraded autofocus. It will work better with extension tubes and at a distance, which will be great for sports and nature photographers.

Canon announces the Full frame EOS 6D

CanonRumors, TechHive, and DSL News Shooter, all have articles.

For about $2100 they are offering the body that is a full frame 20.2 Megapixel Full Frame Sensor and includes both a GPS and WIFI! This is almost a $1000 less than the next full frame sensor.

Doesn't have the swing out LCD of my 60D though. Nor does it have a headphone jack for audio monitoring, so you really need a separate audio recorder! The WIFI will be amazing though, when you can control it from your iPhone or iPad! HOW COOL IS THAT? Think of remote focus pulling?!??! AWESOME!!!

CanonRumors has links to more coverage of Canon EOS C100

CanonRumors has post to much of the coverage across the web of the new Canon EOS C100.

And there own coverage of the newly announced botton end of it's Cinema EOS cameras.

It is an exciting camera, but I still think overpriced compared to the DSLR's it is improving on. If this camera was under $3000 it would be really impressive, but at $8000 it is a bit too expensive.

Philip Bloom on the Canon C100

Philip Bloom takes a look at the specs for the C100 and has a good talk on it. Worth checking out.

HD Warrior compares the Canon C100 to the Sony FS700

HD Warrior has a good comparison of the Canon C100 and the Sony FS700. Of course this is without getting it's hands on the C100 as it has only just been announced.

Canon has announced the C100 Camera for $7999

Canon has announced the release of the EOS C100 Video Camera with 1920x1080 resolution on a Super 35MM sensor for $7999. Making a more affordable addition to their new cinema camera lineup. It is scheduled to ship in November.

With the 4K C500 shipping for $30,000 in October, the currently shipping 2K C300 for $15999, they now have a much more reasonably priced cousin.

It is 4:2:0 instead of 4:2:2, but is 15% smaller with only a an EF mount and no RAW recording, but does inclue XLR inputs which is great.

Canon is also releasing 2 more EF prime mounts a 14mm t3.1 and a 125mm t2.2 ready for 4K shooting.

Problem with Canon EF 40mm f2.8

Canonrumors is reporting on a problem with the Canon EF 40mm f2.8

If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working.

It seems they will have a firmware update for the camera in August to fix the problem, but for now just remove the lens and put it back on.

The Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera

Canon has officially announced the EOS M Mirrorless Camera, and DP Review has an excellent Hands on Review.

And with an Adapter it can use any EOS EF or EF-S lens with it's APS-C sized sensor, and includes full video capabilities, though it doesn't look to have as many controls as their normal DSLRs. Sill for small and fast and compatibility this is awesome. I TOTALLY WANT ONE!

It's stats stand like this:

  • New EF-M lens mount (optimized for APS-C sensor size)
  • 18MP APS-C 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
  • Continuous autofocus in movie mode with subject tracking
  • 14-bit DIGIC5 processor
  • ISO 100-12800 standard, 25600 expanded
  • 4.3 fps continuous shooting, 3 fps with autofocus tracking
  • 1080p30 video recording, stereo sound (with 25p or 24p options)
  • External microphone socket and adjustable sound recording level
  • 1040k dot 3:2 touch-sensitive ClearView II LCD (capacitative type, multi-touch support)
  • Standard EOS hot-shoe for external flash (no built-in flash)
  • 'Creative Filters' image-processing controls, previewed live on-screen

This is an exciting camera, though it sure took Canon a while to get it out (well it comes out in October) as every other manufacturer has one, but the adapter to Canon Lenses makes this so much more versatile! It is $799 with a 22mm, though you will want to spend a little more for EF Lens Adapter!

Cheesy Cam on Canon 40mm F/2.8 Pancake Lens Manual Focus Noise

Cheesy Cam has a video on the Manual Focus noise of the new Canon 40mm F/2.8 Pancake lens which could be an issue for video shooting.

Canon EOS T4i and 40mm f2.8 lenses available for pre-order at B&H

The T4i with the very cool touchscreen display is available for $849 for the body only or $1199 wtih an EF-S 18-135MM Lens.

Even cooler to me is the new Canon 40mm Pancake 40mm f2.8 EF Lens with continuos autofocus for video shooting for $199.

Canon EOS Rebel T4i and EF 40mm f 2.8 lens leaked

Photo Rumors has the info on the new Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D and a new EF 40mm F2.8 lens. I want to know how much that 40MM lens is, as that is a pretty fast lens, and a bit wider than the 50mm I have.

Engadget hands on with the Canon C500

Engagedget has a nice little hands on with Canon’s new 4K camera, which is noticeably heavier than it’s 1080 counterpart the C300. Check out the video.

Canon Announced EOS-1D C 4K DSLR

Electonista has this story, about the new 4K DSLR from Canon. It shoots 4K 4096x2160 video at 24 FPS 8 bit 4:2:2 video. It has an 18.1 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with a maximum ISO of 25,600 and 12FPS continuos shooting like the EOS 1D X it is based on.

With video it shoots 4K with the full sensor, but 1080 can either be the full sensor for full sharpness and 35MM equivelency, or it can use a middle portion which allows for 60P frame rates.

The LCS can remain on even with external HDMI attached, and it has a headphone jack as well.

It will be released in 2012, but has not been given a price yet.

Sure no PL mount, but very exciting. If only they would move some of this tech to lower end cameras as well.

Canon C500 with 4K

Electronista actually has the info on this, but Canon has announced a higher end big daddy to the C300, the C500 and C500PL. They both output 10 bit uncompressed RAW footage and simultaneously records 50Mbps HD proxy video to CF cards for easy offline editing (a brilliant idea). It has a super 35MM equivalent CMOS sensor which is 8.85 megapixels.

It has cinema 4L 4096x2160 as well as 3840x2160 for 4k TV, though only records 1080 to the dual CF cards. It does 0-60FPS in 12 bit RGB 4:4:$ or at 10bit YCrRb 4:22 it can go up to 120 FPS.

No pricing has been announced, but this makes Canon a serious contender, as well as having the EOS facility in Los Angeles for support.

Canon intros 600EX-RT wirlress Speedlite

CanonRumors has the news on Canon’s new 600EX-RT Speedlite with wireless transmitter built in! Very very cool! They should have done this ages ago, but it is brilliant to have this built in.

Canon has released the EOS 5D Mark III

Canon has finally released the new flagship EOS 5D Mark III. This has many new video specific additions and better low light functionality for this full frame sensor camera.

Check out a video review over at DPReview. And of course why Stu at Prolost just pre-ordered one, which is a great read for all people interested in DSLR video. And Photorumors has a great article on the insides of the camera.

I would love one, but can’t afford it, or the move to full frame from APC-C as I have too many lenses currently invested (though some are full sized lenses already).

Canon MXF ingest for FCP X

FCP.Co has the announcement of Canon having released a new MXF ingest for FCP X. Download it from Canon here.

Ron Mart hands on with EOS 1D X

Ron Mart has an excellent must read hands on with the EOS 1D-X telling about it's new features and how well it fares with it's predecessors.

Damn I would love to get my hands on one of these, but many of my lenses wouldn't work since I have an APS-C.

Canon has updated EOS Utility for Lion

Canon has updated it’s EOS Utility to 2.10.4 with Lion Support. You must have the original version from your CD installed to update (can’t Canon just leave the software for full install online, you have to have the cameras to use it anyway).

DSLRPro has 4 Pros talk about the Canon C300

. Worth checking out. Sounds like people do really like this Camera, though to me it does still seem overpriced!
DSLR News has 4 Pros talk about their experienced using the new Canon C300 with video

Jon Yi's Canon C300 test video

Canon Rumors has posted Jon Yi’s Test video from a pre-release Canon EOS C300. It really shows how well this camera performs, and is pretty funny as well. ll worth checking out.

I still think that the Camera is overpriced though, and should have been more around the price of a 5D body, or maybe even twice that, but $20,000 is just too much for a camera that takes EOS lenses.

Canon EOS 300D Website

Thanks to Cinema 5D for pointing out that Canon has put up a website for Cinema EOS and the EOS 300D Camera.

Stu at Prolost on EOS C300

Stu at prolost has a good article on the Canon EOS C300. It goes into their features as per their FAQ.

As Stu says this will be interesting to see which turns out to be the better camera, the EOS or the less expensive Scarlet.

Mike Curtis from HD for Indies on EOS C300

Mike Curtis from HD For Indies, has a good take on the C300 with good and bad. It looks like the Camera is aimed at the Sony F3, and not the red one.

It has some better features, but some not as good.

As I said elsewhere, why can the less expensive scarlet autofocus with Canon EF lenses, but the Canon cannot. It also cannot do 444 out, like the Sony can (with an expensive upgrade) which would bypass the Long GOP MPEG 2 compression, making the Sony seem the better choice, especially with it’s higher frame rate (1080p60 vs 24) and 444 capabilities (even if both are after a firmware upgrade to the F3.

Personally I think Canon screwed the pooch a bit, as they missed the price point. At under $10,000 this would be huge, but at $16-20,000 it is too expensive, without enough high end features. And for film it seems that the Scarlet would be better, though of course it does have a much harder workflow.

Just Installed Magic Lantern to my Canon EOS 60D

I just installed the amazing Magic Lantern Firmware add-on to my Canon 60D. It modifies your original firmware to boot software from the card, and adds a huge amount of amazing functionality for shooting stills and video.

It adds on screen histogram or waveform and zebras while shooting video or stills, cropmarks, spotmeter, magic zoom for focusing, bit rate control, movie logging, up to step HDR bracketing. This is just awesome!

I am blown away! Canon should buy this or hire these guys. It is amazing how much more my camera can do for free!

Canon EOS C300 Announced

Canonrumors has the info, and they were right the EOS C300 has been announced.

  • 8.3mp 2160×3840 Super-35 CMOS sensor (4K resolution)
  • DIGIC DVIII Processor
  • Canon XF Codec
  • Dual Compact Flash Slots
  • Exposure and focus are both manual only
  • Uses existing BP-955 and BP-975 batteries
  • Sold as a system, including LCD monitor / XLR audio unit, side grip, and top handle.
  • Availability: Jan. 2012; Price: appx. $16,000 USD

And there is a PL mount version and an EF version, and a slew of new EF cinema quality lenses.

They are also opening a Canon center in Hollywood to deal with the cameras and really push into Cinema.

A bit more expensive than I had hoped, and I want to know more about compression and codec.

Canon Rumors on New Video Camera

Canon Rumors has a possible report on the new video camera being announced today at 3 PM. Is it the EOS 300c?

New Canon EOS 1D X

Cinema 5D is reporting that Canon has announced it’s new flagship camera, the Canon EOS 1D X.

Well one mystery is solved,

It is an 18 MP camera full frame, and can shoot 12 FPS in RAW. And it has very exciting new video features:

- 1920×1080 at 24, 25 and 30fps, as well as 1280×720- at 50 and 60fps

- manual audio levels (also during recording)

- ISO range for movie shooting runs from ISO 100 to- 51,200 (surely a new low-light king)

- 2 compression options “IPB” or “ALL-I” (all intra-frames)

- The EOS-1D X still records movies using the H.264- codec but it is the compression type within this codec- that has been changed (!!!).

- ALL-I means every frame for itself!

- no more 12 minute clip length, clips can now be up to- 30 minutes. (clips over 4GB will continue in new file)

- SMPTE Timecode!!! (Nice nice) (Rec. Run, Freerun- and 2 more modes)

- live audio level meter on the rear screen during filming- and the ability to adjust the audio recording level during- filming.

- “silent control” audio level adjustment through- dedicated button.

- 29.97fps and 59.94fps non drop frame for NTSC land

- no more .THM files. –> thumbnails are now metadata- inside the actual video.

- improved (?) moiré and line skipping performance

- it looks like still 8bit (biggest booh)

Still not a real Canon Video Camera based on their DSLR technology, but an exciting DSLR that will be out in March of next year for $6800.

I think that the next announcement will a video camera based on similar technology, like the Sony F3.

Read the full press release at Canon’s site. And a video trailer is available.

Here is the feature sheet.

Canon Event November 3rd

Petapixel is reporting that Canon has a Pro Event on November 3rd, 2011 in Hollywood.

It is my bet that Canon is releasing a video camera based on their DSLR technology, and I bet they will release one that works with Canon S or at least EF lenses and one that is a PL mount. They usually take longer when it comes to releasing their video cameras, but they are always top of the line, and a true video camera Canon lenses would be awesome, and would give the new Sony and Panasonic cameras a run for their money, especially being able to use existing lenses.

EF Mount Canon Video Camera?

CanonRumors has a report that Canon may be releasing 2 exciting new cameras in October. Both with an APS-C Sensor, but one with an EF Mount and one with a PL mount. The EF is exciting for me as I could use my existing lenses and have a real video camera and not just a DSLR with video functionality. Hopefully this will compete with Sony’s F3 and the Panasonic AF100, though the PL Mount on the F3 makes it superior, the EF might be more exciting for me, just because I own so many lenses already.
